NMJFC U9's V Buxton Young Bucks - 17/9/23

Very familiar opposition for The Hornets who often play their best games against this Buxton.

It tends to be a proper game of football with both teams being very evenly-matched over our previous seasons in this league but the move up to 7x7 was an interesting dynamic with the season just beginning.

Yet another battle and a fantastic display by two teams who genuinely want to beat each other! To be able to say this is very refreshing.

As coaches, we have made a conscious effort to be less vocal on the side-line this season and encouraged the boys to communicate with each other during the game, rather than relying on instructions from us. These kids never let you down! Every single one of them upped their game and began to speak more & more. They were shouting instructions, encouragement and even demanding where the next passage of play should go.

It was an absolute pleasure to watch them bond and naturally and they got the rewards.

Fenn wasn't having to do too much in goal but when called upon he delivered and made some super saves.

Finley was making sure he was involved by putting in big tackles and reminding our opposition how tough he is. Both him and Oliver L were relentless at the back and both keen to take some long shots at goal.

The boys have been working on set-pieces and you could tell. Frankie was taking in-swinging corners and every single time, it was delivered into 'The Danger-Zone' and Ronan was the first to produce the goods and the lads were off & running.

This was followed by some superb strikes by Frankie, Albie (twice) and then Ollie M began finding his confidence and bagged a couple of lovely goals too! Ronan & Albie worked the wings magnificiantly.

Second-half Buxton came out fighting and they managed to get themselves back in the game but The Hornets dug-in and found an answer to everything. It was an incredible display of football from a team that just continues to progress and embrace everything we ask of them. Oliver B couldn't be a better example of this. Dropped into midfield this year and the way he is linking up the ball from defence to attack is incredible.

Player of the Match could have gone to so many of them but Ollie M's 🏅 performance stood out. He was electric in the last third and seemed to grow & grow as the match went on. It almost feels unfair to isolate one player as this was a complete team achievement and all of you gave 100%.

Keep it up boys.
