Match Report – 10th January – New Mills Vipers U8s vs Buxton YB Orange U8s

A new year and a new game for the Vipers to start the year with.  A full squad back after Christmas with illnesses and injuries recovered from.  Jude would be our first captain of the new year, leading the team and making decisions on freekicks and penalties if needed.   As always, all players play a huge role whether from the start or as our game changers in the first or second half.

The game started and the Vipers were on the front foot right away, the defensive trio of Jude, Leo and Thomas were battling hard and playing the ball forward to Logan and Kit to make things happen.  They were also hoping their first half keeper, Kingsley, would have little to do.

The passing started to click but Logan’s powerful running setup the opening goal for him to finish past the Buxton keeper.

The great play continued working on moving the ball and Kit and Logan were linking up well for further chances which Logan managed to score.  It was then Logan who turned provider for Kit to get on the scoresheet.  The first half continued with our game changers Alistair, Lily and Elliott.  They slotted in seamlessly but Buxton were starting to play good football themselves. Kingsley dealt well with some shots but the defenders battled brilliantly to keep winning the ball and restrict chances.

By half time, the Vipers were ready for a breather but the message was simple, keep working hard for each other and can we find those passes to each other and move the ball around.  Kit would take the gloves for the second half with Kingsley slotting into midfield.

For the second half, Buxton came out to get back into the game but all the players did well to get their tackles in.  When Kit was tested, he stood up to the task and even managed a great ball downfield for Elliott to get a goal too.  Kingsley was trying to create but was marshalled well by Buxton, Thomas was running around winning the ball constantly, linking well with lily going forward.  Lily was also at her tackling best, but starting drive forward with the ball more and more which is great to see.

Jude was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet himself with a couple of efforts that tested the Buxton keeper.

Logan was doing well linking the play in the second period especially with Elliott, who himself was unlucky not to score more.  Leo was doing well to pick his passes from the back and Alistair, on his first game back from his ankle injury, did brilliant and brave to get involved well in the game, tackling well and playing his passes too.

The game was a good start to the new year but a continuation of the great work the Vipers have been putting in all season – so much more to come from this great group of players…
