The World Cup was kicking off later in the afternoon, but first there was a much more important tie for Wasps supporters - NMJFC U8 Wasps v Buxton Young Bucks U8 Blues!

It was a tricky match against a robust and stubborn opponent.  In the first half the Wasps were unable to create clear chances, despite repeatedly winning corners and a dazzling display of footwork from Brooke – who seemed to dribble past a dozen tormented opponents every time she got the ball! 👏

First half goalkeeper Toby kept the Wasps in the game.  When a powerful high looping shot looked certain to find the back of the net, he got his body behind the ball to make a brilliant save.  Later, with the ball bouncing among a determined group of attacking and defending players just in front of the goal, he bravely stepped in to pick the ball out and stop the danger. 👏

This was the football cliché of a game of two halves.  After a reminder at half time about their own abilities, the Wasps came back out with their usual intensity.  Unleashed from goal Toby joined Sam and Brooke in repeatedly making tackles and driving forwards with the ball. 👏

But still no clear chances.  Then, stepping out from defence, into space, and thumping the ball neatly past the goalkeeper came Jacob ⚽!

Having just dusted himself off after a strong challenge James was then alert to an opportunity to pressure the opposition goalkeeper, taking the rest of team with him.  A chance was created, and the ball was blasted in – great pressing everyone and great finish James ⚽!

As usual it was smiles all round afterwards.  Jacob was keen to point out his scoring record for a defender, and James was equally happy talking about his first goal with his weaker left foot! 🙂

As the teams shook hands the opposition coaches immediately sought out Dylan to congratulate him for an amazing second half goalkeeping performance.  He blocked shots - he parried them round the woodwork - he tipped them over the bar!  When a shot was smashed low into the bottom corner the opposition were already celebrating when he somehow trapped the ball against the post!  Dylan received the NMJFC Player of the Match trophy 🏆for a performance that a professional goalkeeper would be proud of!

As usual everyone had played their part in another entertaining game of football - well done Wasps!
