New Mills U7’s returned to the Mike Doyle Centre this Saturday facing a dual opposition of that of Spurley Hey Clarets U7’s and Storm Amy. We knew it was going to be a challenge when a simple pass made in warm up was quickly taken away by Amy and a chase to recover ensued!
Both teams agreed to go 7 a side rather than 5 a side to keep as many of the players as warm as possible to keep them moving. No arguments from the ref who in himself deserves some credit for also turning up in those conditions.
Spurley Hey came out strong and caught us a little off guard at first managing to take the lead. This was then followed up by plenty of attacks from Spurley Hey but they struggled to get past the combinations of Henry, Angus, Louie, Tobias and Alfred (subject to substitutions) all of whom maintained a strong defensive stance with some great tackles and passing the ball forward. Some great stops by our first half keeper Charlie who’s powerful kick sent the ball back up field.
Gradually New Mills got a foothold and started to press into the opposition's half with some close chances just going wide of the keeper. However, eventually we started to see positives on our own scoreline as we started to hit the back of the net.
In the second half some tenacious attacking by New Mills saw our front three of Ollie, Seb and Joseph play combinations of passes and managed to level the scoreline just before the final whistle.
We pushed hard to play the ball in their half lessening the pressure on our defense.
Scoreline finished with a Hatrick from Ollie and goals from Joseph and Seb.
Every player made a significant contribution to the match with some top class passing to create opportunities, a pleasure to play the opposition that never gave up and showed true stamina under the conditions to make it a tough but enjoyable match to watch.
All in all on a really tough day, despite being cold and drenched; New Mills made everyone proud with their tenacity and resilience in the conditions they endured.
Characteristics perfectly summed up by Louie, who with his big smile received the Player Of The Week trophy.
The boys did great and got a big well done from all of those watching.
Here’s hoping we don’t see any more storms for a while!!
