Match Report New Mills Juniors U7s vs Bramhall North 75 Black Lions U7s
Stockport Power league 14/09/24; KO 13.10
A beautiful September day bathed in sunshine awaited us for our early afternoon kick-off against a team who we faced in the Summer League last season.
We knew they would be well organised, loved their football and would give us quite a game.
Before the match, we spoke with the players about what we had worked on in training this week. We worked ontrying to stay in position, move together but find the spaces to move the ball around. After having a full squad last week, we were two players down unfortunately with Alistair unavailable and Jude injuring his arm on Friday – but Jude still came down to cheer us on – great team spirit Jude.
We started with the King of goalkeeping, Kingsley, in goal. Captain Kitman at centre back with Thomas and Leo either side of him. Lily and Elliott would play through the middle. Logan would be our only game-changer today, but with the blazing sun, we would need to make sure we gave as many breaks for water as possible.
The game kicked off and immediately Bramhall pushed forward to put the Millers under pressure, the whole team did their best to get tackles in with Lily battling especially hard in midfield.
Kit was marshalling the backline well and was trying to push us forward. Thomas was as energetic as ever, trying to get his tackles in and build on his mazy run from last week. His confidence in dribbling is growing and it is great to see. Leo, our positional king, was as solid as ever, marshalling his side of the pitch. Kingsley was put under some early pressure but no matter what Bramhall threw at him, he palmed or kicked it away. He even got a foot to the chest, accidently, but carried on through till half-time in goal. Amazing bravery Kingsley well done. Bramhall were well organised and manged to read our passing game which led to our chances being limited to counterattacks. Kit, tried to play the ball through several times to Elliott and although he went on numerous runs, was unable to test the Bramhall keeper. Logan came on and immediately made a difference. His ball-carrying ability managed to get us up the field more and more, with Kit starting to get a greater grip on running the game.
On one attack we got a free kick for handball. Our set-piece taker Kit stepped up, could he score like he had in the summer league? Of course he could… A fantastic strike into the bottom corner past the keeper gave him his first goal of the season, with a celebration to match. Bramhall tried to respond immediately but the goal had galvanised the Mini-Millers and a ball through from Logan to Elliott allowed him to shoot with an arrowed strike into the bottom corner.
Bramhall were still doing their best to rain shots into our goal, but no matter how many shots, corners and crosses that came in, Kingsley stood up to the task, keeping as many shots as he could out of his goal.
Half-time came and a well-deserved drink and rest. We encouraged more of the same, keep working hard for each other, try to find space and work together as a team. Kit took the gloves for the second half, with Kingsley having a rest at the start of the second half.
The second half was much of the same as the first with New Mills working hard with and without the ball, everyone trying to get the ball forward. Unfortunately, the effort took its tollon Lily who got an injury to her leg, but she wanted to help the team by going in net – amazing bravery Lily and team spirit to want to help.
Kit came out to try and drive the team forward. Bramhall put Lily to the test as much as they could but the final action in the game was the most pleasing from the team. A kick-in and a pass inside to Elliott, who played Kit in down the right-hand side, he took a touch, got his head up and played a perfect cross to Logan running into the box who swept home the goal of the game. Superb team play on show, putting training activities into practice.
Overall, another great team effort, from Kit’s goal and assist, Lily’s superb bravery, Logan’s marauding runs, Elliotts determination and dribbling, Thomas’s teamwork and tough tackling, Leo’s amazing positioning and Kingsley’s expert goalkeeping. Well done Mini-Millers, we look forward to more of the same next week.
