Match Report New Mills Juniors U7s vs Spurley Hey Clarets U7s - 08/02/25

Writer: R.OakesR.Oakes

There are games in a season where everything works out the way it’s supposed to.  When it happens, it is awesome to watch and a game that lives in the memory for everyone present.

This week our mini-millers had such a week.  This week was a performance which everyone enjoyed from the players to the coaches and those parents and other supporters watching.

The team was not quite at full strength with Alistair not well, but still had 8 players and we agreed with our opposite coaches to play 6 as usual.

We had prepared ourselves for tough opponents which we know Spurley Hey are, to make sure that we would have fun and enjoy the match….oh how we enjoyed it.

Normally I would go through the events of the game but instead I’ll showcase how amazing every player was not just individually but as a team.

Kingsley – Started in goal in the first half and this week not only did he managed to make several saves to help the team, but he held these shots too.  His hands were like glue this week but not only his hands, his feet played some great passes out to wings to start attacks.  In the 2nd half, he came outfield and battled hard to in the middle, working hard to win tackles but most pleasing to see was he trying to pass the ball and create for the team.

Leo – our John Terry of New Mills, reads the game brilliantly, executed his tackles well and worked hard across the pitch to deny clearcut opportunities for our opponents. Not only that, every week Leo is getting more confident at after winning the ball playing his passes to start attacks.  His decision making is improving week on week, he’s realising when he has time to pick a pass and when to clear to safety – awesome as always at the back.

Kit – started on the right and was industrious as ever with high energy down to wing.  Got a goal early from a cross which snuck into the far corner.  This gave him confidence and he played one of his best games.  He is always determined to score but his work rate for his teammates is increasing each week and was quick to get back to help defend.  Some quick thinking at dribble-ins kept attacks going but he has an eye for a pass, often switching play to the far side for the team to keep possession.  He slotted into defence in the second half to give Leo his rest and was relentless with his tackling and disciplined to cover as best he could.

Jude – starting on the left and later playing further forwardhad a super game.  Not only is his work-rate increasing each week, but he is really putting himself about.  Although he maybe smaller than other players, his stature on the field is greater than most.  He battles hard to win and keep the ball.  Working hard on his passing and linking up with his teammates was great to see.  Not only driving forward on attack, but keen in defence.  Always switched on to stop dribble-ins and quick to put pressure on after a goal kick, in the second half he was also unlucky not to get on the scoresheet trying to get onto some Logan crosses.

Lily – starting in the middle, is the toughest player without a doubt and showed her strength against this week.  She is the toughest tackler, strongest physically and never stops running.  Keen to win the ball and linking play up more and more each week.  She is also keen to get her shots away now and was also unlucky not to get on the scoresheet this week as well.  Her and Jude dovetail so well together to put pressure high to win the ball back. Each week opponents underestimate her and each week they show them how good she is.

Elliott – starting further forward, Elliott is fast, brilliant at dribbling and deadly in front of goal as he demonstrated getting a goal latching onto a Logan cross in the second halfand another after a great run.  What Elliott gives the team is a great example of effort, he works hard to get the team forward but is just as fast to get back – although not the toughest in the tackle, he never shies away.  This week he was instrumental when playing on the left driving the ball up the field after opponent’s attacks.  Keep working hard Elliott!

Logan started on the bench this week but what a game changer he was.  Coming on the right for Kit, he worked hard forward and back to support the defence but setup so many attacks with his driving runs, quick thinking, devasting crossing and also got himself a goal with his deflected strike at the start of the second half.  Always keen to work for the team but his crosses are getting better every week and although only one assist this week, he created some many more chances.

Thomas – this week’s captain and he was captain fantastic.  One of the quieter members of the team but he works as hard as the rest.  Determined to fight for the ball, works hard to dribble and create but each week never gives up. What was most impressive this week was his bravery in goal in the second half.  He made multiple saves, didn’t shy away from the ball and even took one to the face to stop a shot.  Amazing bravery and a true captain’s performance from Thomas.

Such an awesome game to watch – well done U7s, we can’t wait to see what next week brings.
