Match report New Mills U11 Scorpions vs Whaley Bridge U11 Reds - 01/02/26

Great to play a different opponent this week, and a familiar one in Whaley Reds. Good to catch up with the coaches and discuss how the last few months have unfolded for each team.
We had a full house, minus Alfie today, so we were down to one sub……. It was touch and go before kick off whether we had a full team as due to outside influences a few were running late.
We kicked off with David standing strong between the goalposts, superb from the young man to adopt his second position so willingly 👍🏻 2 minutes after kick off, Frankie the Cat (& coach Jordan arrived…. Thanks Phil for standing in for a brief moment) a quick switch around with Frankie coming on for David, who was then immediately called into action to tip a shot round the post from a strong Whaley shot.
Early on in the first half, a Frankie H header just went over the bar. The Scorpions were a little unsettled and seemed to be rushing. Rocco K (playing in a CAM role) was great at running back and covering his defenders.
Callum, Will and Oliver B were standing firm in defence …. Oliver covered a lot of turf today and showed his strength in challenge after challenge.
Leo lofted over a corner from the left, Rocco T got his head to it, which slightly deflected off a Whaley player and went in ⚽️ (definitely Rocco’s goal)
This gave the scorpions some momentum which resulted in Rocco K having a shot (just wide) another from Rocco T (saved) Leo had one saved and Will had an effort just wide.
Half time team talk and a few home truths.. despite their dominance, the Scorpions looked like they were going through the motions, no passion, no desire.
The second half was exactly what as coaches we’d asked for…. Fire, passion and a desire to be the best they could be.
Captain Leo ran down the right, crossed the ball for his left wing wizard Dylan to beat the Whaley keeper ⚽️
A really even game was unfolding which was great to watch. Another break by the Scorpions, saw Will power into the penalty area, receive the ball and hit home for his first of the season ⚽️
Every player upped their effort in the second half, Frankie C was prepared when he was called upon, Callum was sharp, Rocco K was really getting involved.
David had been quietly getting on with his role defending and playing the ball forward… he received the ball just inside the area and took a shot which just sailed wide. Not long after David was there again with another effort. The amount of running and tackling David did today was outstanding.
Rocco T wasn’t finished and after showing his strength and holding off his marker, he ran through and scored his second of the season with his left foot ⚽️👍🏻 (plenty with his right.. so are we developing a two footed striker 🤞🏻)
Leo and Dylan (who had quick feet all game with some delightful dribbling) switched wings again. This allowed Leo to get the ball, hit the accelerator, beat the defender and slot home ⚽️
A great second half performance from the Scorpions.
Today’s PoTM was David who did the running of several players, put in some great challenges, stood tall in goal and even had a few shots. A great all round performance 👍🏻
