Match report New Mills u14 v Whaley Bridge u14 - 01/02/26

The Millers started brightly and took an early lead when Mayson finished well after a decisive pass from Darragh.

Whaley responded quickly with a long-range effort to level the score, but the Millers continued to cause problems. The front three were a constant threat to the Whaley back line, and Mayson soon grabbed his second after an excellent assist from Bertie.

The Millers’ midfield dominated the game from start to finish, with India, Bobby and Jess working tirelessly and providing excellent service to the attacking trio of Darragh, Mayson and Bertie.

At the back, Fletcher, Alfie, Stan and Cole were superb, winning their duels and limiting Whaley to very few chances. Archie organised the defence well and distributed quickly to launch counter-attacks whenever possible.

Darragh then added a third before half-time after some neat link-up play with Mayson, giving the Millers a deserved 3–1 lead at the break.

The Millers continued their strong performance in the second half. Sustained pressure led to a corner, and Darragh’s delivery to the back post was perfectly met by Bobby, who headed home the fourth.

Greeny came on to keep the tempo high in attack and ran the Whaley defence ragged, going close to scoring on a couple of occasions. Alex slotted in at full-back and impressed with his calmness on the ball, along with excellent passing and positional play. Daniel also came on at centre-back, making sure Whaley had no opportunities, winning every battle with their striker and showing composure when playing out from the back. Greg later joined the attack as the Millers adjusted their shape to see the game out.

Darragh then produced a moment of magic, smashing an unstoppable “banger” (Darragh’s words) into the roof of the net after a perfectly weighted pass from Jess found him in space in the box. Greg completed the scoring with a fantastic spin on the edge of the box before finishing into the bottom corner, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance after another defence-splitting pass from Jess.

The Millers controlled the game with real maturity and played with an impressive speed and confidence that made them a joy to watch.

Bertie deservedly took the Player of the Match award for his outstanding approach play and relentless running at the Whaley defence. Well done, Bertie.
