Match Report New Mills U9 Hornets VS New Mills U9 Wasps 05/11/23

Derby Day! A day that forces a real mix of emotions. Now we’re still not sure why but knowing your opponents personally causes a real internal conflict.

We were expecting two things this morning. A hammering of rain and a bit of a hammering from our opponents. Well, we turned up and it was lovely and bright, and the Wasps turned up for a game.

The Hornets started the game hard and fast. Even with the Wasps taking a more defensive formation than usual. We pushed back at every opportunity and even got a couple of counterattack chances. The second Half started with the Wasps pushing for the attack trying to keep themselves in the game. That’s when the Hornets stepped up to another level. Denying the wasps of most opportunities.

I really tough game a hard one to swallow but let me tell you about our players:

Frankie: Our fearless goalkeeper who throws his whole body on the line and he even took a couple of kicks today. He has got great reactions and is improving week on week.

Sam: Some might say he’s little, we say he’s a little tank. He doesn’t back down from anyone, size doesn’t matter. He will protect that box at all costs even if it means he takes a knock himself.

Alexander: Chief of clearing! If the ball comes near him, he’s going to try and blast it away. Determined to be the best team player there is and not give up.

Jacob: Our tower of defence. We stand him in the middle of our defence giving him a view of the whole pitch. He waits for the ball to come into range then he attacks.

Alfie: The Assassin he goes under the radar and gets himself in great positions. Always ready to strike.

Rocco: This boy was waiting to pounce this morning like a Predator. He shows us how fast he can run when he wants that ball. The power in the shot of this young man is incredible and makes sure his opponent know it.

Dylan: His skills on the ball require more than one player to get the ball off him. He will make you think he is running one way then spin around and leave you in the dust. He is becoming a true example of a leader and growing well into his captaincy.

Kai: The playmaker! We spent weeks telling this lad to look for the pass. Now he’s going beyond that and planning plays. He’s always where you want him to be. Showing he has some great football knowledge.

A rough game for this team this morning but these young players have some incredible individual skills. With a bit of support from their coaches and more time together as a team. We will bring these skills together and show the league what we have.

We are so very proud of our wasps. Their grit and determination is inspiring for us all.
