Saturday comes around soon enough and the our Mini-Millers continue their footballing journey in the Stockport Summer League.
Today’s opponents were new opposition in Reddish North End and we were ready in the midday sun to continue our progression.
Before the game we spoke to the players about corners and what positions to be organised into, to try our best to defend them.
This week we had Kingsley and Leo back but Alistair was not available so we started with Elliott in goal.
Thomas and Logan in defence, Lily and Kit in midfield and Jude as striker.
The game kicked off and immediately Reddish put New Mills under pressure with several attacks but as ever, Logan was marshalling the back-line well.
Thomas was providing plenty of energy alongside him try to prevent crosses, and early on, the team got their chance to show what they had learned from our talk on corners beforehand.
The team managed to organise themselves into position well and Elliott was equal to the test that Reddish put him under.
We brought Kingsley on into defence, Lexi as striker and Leo into midfield and immediately Kingsley made a great clearance which put Kit through on goal. He ran as fast as he could to get on the end of Kingsley’s clearance and his shot was into the side-netting – superb effort. This gave the Mini-Millers a lift and after Reddish’s goal kick, Kit picked up the ball in midfield and managed to battle through two challenges to force his way through on goal again but the Reddish keeper was up to his effort this time. The half wore on with Logan and Kingsley showing how well they can defend together, Kit dropped back into defence when Logan needed a break and Lily and Leo tried to create from midfield.
But Reddish were well organised and made it tough for New Mills to push forward. At half time, we discussed about working hard for each other as a team – putting in lots of running and effort to make sure you want to have the ball more then the opposition. Elliott came out at half time with Kingsley taking over the gloves.
What a second half it was. Thomas and Leo battled superbly in the back line with Lily in front trying to create.
Logan in the midfield brought his tackling and passing to the fore and it was New Mills who were first on the scoresheet in the 2nd half. A ball played through by Kit was not cleared by Reddish and Elliott managed to block the clearance and place a shot past the keeper. Elliott wasn’t finished there, his running down the left with the support of Jude gave New Mills another opportunity but Jude couldn’t get his shot away. Reddish tried to play the ball out and superb closing down from Elliott allowed him to block the clearance, straight past the goalkeeper.
The momentum had really swung in our favour in the 2nd half and the half time talk about running and wanting it more, certainly showed. Superb skills in the middle by Lexi, with a slick drag-back took two defenders out of play but Logan couldn’t latch onto her pass.
Jude provided lots of energy going forward with Kit, Logan & Lily providing the engine room in midfield. Kingsley had little to do in goal and what he did had to do he handled with his usual composure. Thomas and Leo were as tough to play against as any defence we had seen. The superb play continued and Kit released Lily on the right to try and play the ball across to Elliott but the clearance landed to Logan, he tried to weave to get his shot away but the tackle from the Reddish player gave the ball straight to Elliott to complete his hat-trick!! Amazing work Elliott and well-deserved. The team continued to push forward and the final goal was scorer turned provider – Elliott’s long ball forward was chased down and converted with a cool finish by Logan.
Another week and another huge improvement by this team, the enjoyment on the pitch is really being seen by us coaches and parents, who loved watching the great 2nd half teamwork. What is amazing about this team is not only do they enjoy their football, they are keen to learn and take on feedback and try their best to put it into practice.
Amazing play from New Mills U6s – well done team, you make us proud every week…Next Saturday we will grow again.
