New Mills Scorpions U10 v Tintwistle Diamonds U10
With football, there are always players who will ‘up their game’ when it’s needed …….. and today every single one of the Scorpions did just that. We knew we were up against a tough opponent in Tintwistle so our team talk before the game was about communication and taking your time on the ball.
We lined up with Frankie the Cat in goal, Callum and Will at the back, Alfie on the right and Dylan on the left in midfield with Ted playing just behind Rocco T (well… Ted covered every inch of that pitch today but more on that later) Dayvid would bide his time and get on for the 2nd half.
We were missing Leo and Rocco K today so only had the luxury of one sub, but those 8 players stood proud.
The first half kicked off with both teams finding their feet, the Scorpions were putting some nice passes together from the back through to midfield.
Dylan threaded a pass through to Rocco who shot just wide. This seemed to wake the team up… Alfie received the ball from Will… then got past a defender and fired the ball forward ….. which went through another defender and the keepers legs into the goal. Shouts from the coaches to not ‘switch off’ worked and we kept pressing. Will and Callum were solid at the back and Ted was running from box to box. Rocco was fouled and up stepped Ted to take the direct free kick…. It ricocheted off the post and away to safety … unlucky !
Half time team talk from coach Jordan seemed to re-ignite the fire within the Scorpions.
Second half with a switch around with Alfie going to the left and Dayvid on the right midfield. More pressure from the Scorpions saw some scrappy play in midfield and a loose ball to Rocco who powered forward and let fly with a rocket 🚀…. Which landed in the back of the net. More shouts of ‘stay focussed’ worked. Dayvid pushed forward a few times and made some great progress looking to pass forwards to Rocco 👍🏻
From another attack, the Scorpions won a free kick after Dayvid was fouled … Ted looked at the coaches …. The coaches looked at Ted and said .. it’s all yours … and my goodness, Ted hit a thunderbolt of a free kick ⚡️into the net.
Within minutes the Scorpions were on the back foot … but Frankie the cat came to the rescue with an outstanding double save to keep Tintwistle at bay. This was a great game of football to watch.
Our player of the match (although it was a close decision as it could’ve been any one of them) was Ted … over the last few weeks, he’s listened and learned, today that was all shown on the pitch 👊🏻
