Match Report NMJFC U10’S Scorpions - 22/09/24

New Mills Scorpions U10 VS Glossop NE Oranges.

22/09/24

There are few things that you can be sure of when it comes to Sunday football. It’s likely to be cold, it’s likely to be wet and it’s likely to be fun.

One thing the Scorpions were not sure of today was their opponents. New to the league there’s no history or experience only the unknown.

Team talk before the match was a reminder that it wasn’t about the opponent but how we played as a team.

Off the confidence of last week, the team went for a similar formation, and they aimed to press and attack. The game started with a good battle the Scorpions wanted it.

Glossop’s passing game was on point and with all the skills that Ted has he couldn’t be in two places at once (although he would still try). Fortunately, behind the powerhouse anchor that is Ted we have half cat half brick wall Frankie C between the posts. This player really puts his body on the line when it’s required and today, he made some incredible saves.

Callum was the engine today. The central position he provides the ball to the strikers but also supports the defense. Ideal for the position because he plays smart, and he doesn’t panic. He can see where he needs to be.

Getting the ball back up the pitch the boys were hungry for it. Rocco smashed the ball off the post which fell in front of Leo who tried to finish it off, but the keeper parried it away landing in front of Dylan, he strikes it just wide of the net.

Half time came and the team talk was about remaining calm, looking up, keeping it simple and not dropping their heads.

Will and Dayvid became the anchors that we needed. Trying to stop anyone from sneaking through for a shot. Dayvid did an incredible job of getting in between the ball and the net stopping everything he could. Feeling the constant attack Will’s composure and skill was what we needed to get out of our own third of the pitch.

Leo was now up front on his own screaming for the ball. making great runs, getting the in great places Leo was on fire. But, shot after shot was just not making it in the back of the net.

Not only frustrated but also a little exhausted Leo needed his partner back up the top of the pitch with him.

Leo dropped back to support. Alfie took on the speed mantle he never stops running. But today he was running faster, winning balls back and slipping the ball through.

A counterattack found Rocco slipping past the only defender and smashing one in the back of the net. A well-deserved goal that came from some great football. Now Leo loves his team and as captain is always a team player. But something about his teammates goal lit a fire in his belly. The lightening in his feet struck and he followed his partner with another fast ball into the net.

The whole team was pumped. They had woken up and they wanted the fight then… the full-time whistle went.

A really tough game today but these are the games that build character. PoTM came down to being a fighter, not giving up, not dropping his head, and bringing his team out of storm by pushing on. Rocco that says more about you than any of your goals well done.
