The final whistle on the season blew today for our Under 11 girls, and what a way to finish. The girls woke up to sunshine, blue skies and that feeling that something special was in the air – and they certainly delivered.
From the first whistle to the last, it was a performance full of energy, confidence, teamwork and brilliant football that summed up everything this team has grown into over the season.
Martha was outstanding in goal and looked switched on from the very beginning. Her distribution was excellent throughout, always looking to find feet and start attacks from the back. She made some superb saves and interceptions, commanding her area with confidence.
The real turning point of the game came when the opposition were awarded a penalty. Martha stood tall, showed no fear at all and produced an unbelievable save to tip the ball over the crossbar. It lifted the whole team and gave the girls even more belief.
In defence, Annabella and Poppy J were immense. Annabella never stopped running, throwing herself into tackles and using her strength brilliantly in every tussle. She defended aggressively but intelligently, reading danger well all game. Alongside her, Poppy J showed great composure on the ball, intercepting passes and holding possession confidently. Both girls naturally understood when to push up and when to drop back, working together brilliantly to keep the team organised.
Across the middle of the pitch, Ava, Jessica and Evie worked tirelessly. Ava covered the left side with endless energy, never afraid to drive at players and take them on. She was unlucky not to score herself after rattling the crossbar with a great effort. Jessica kept the midfield moving with relentless running and determination, linking play and covering every blade of grass. Evie brought fantastic energy too, getting up and down the pitch constantly and testing the goalkeeper with a shot of her own.
Up front, Paige was a constant threat, hitting the post on a couple of occasions and never giving defenders a moment to relax. Her movement and pressure created problems all game long.
Stevie put in another excellent performance. She looked strong on the ball, passed confidently into feet and showed great bravery carrying the ball forward and driving up the pitch to create attacks. Millie was soon to be introduced, and was relentless, looking to score from the second she stepped onto the pitch
The football the girls played was a joy to watch. At times it looked like a training ground session, with crisp passing, clever one-twos, beautiful diagonal balls and relentless pressure all over the pitch. One move in particular summed it up perfectly as Poppy J found Evie, who quickly linked play through to Paige for a shot on goal. The confidence and teamwork throughout the side was outstanding.
Then came the second half and the moment Millie had been waiting for. Her first goal was a brilliant team effort – Annabella played the ball into Stevie, who threaded a perfect pass through for Millie to run onto before finishing brilliantly. Her confidence only grew from there. Soon after, Ava drove forward down the left and played a superb ball through for Millie, who calmly slotted home her second goal. Her hat-trick moment was another excellent team move, with Poppy J finding Evie, who carried the ball forward before passing into Jessica. Jessica then played a clever pass into space on the right, and Millie did the rest, beating a player before smashing the ball into the top of the goal for a fantastic finish.
Player of the Day deservedly went to Millie for her superb goalscoring performance, but every single girl contributed to a remarkable team display. Martha’s penalty save gave the team belief when it mattered most. Paige was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet after several dangerous efforts. Ava and Annabella hounded the opposition all game with their relentless energy and determination. Poppy J showed brilliant skill and composure, holding the ball up and controlling play superbly. Jessica never stopped running and battled from start to finish. Stevie and Evie, both new to the game this season, have improved massively and should be so proud of how confident and strong they now look on the ball. Every single girl played their part in a fantastic final game and a brilliant end to the season. Well done!
