With an understrength squad this weekend this was always going to be a good test for our boys. The boys started great, keeping possession, passing the ball brilliantly and letting the ball do the work. From a coaches point of view it was lovely to see some players not happy having to play out of their usual position but still leaving every bit of energy and commitment on the pitch.
Oli C was great in goal, made some great saves and mixed up his kick outs to keep his opponents guessing.
The defensive pairings of Brodie, Bobby, Eddie and Joseph played some neat passing football setting up several attacking opportunities for midfielders Harry P, Jimmy, Leighton, Lucas and forward Oli F.
New Mills took the lead with a calm finish from Harry P after an excellent run through the middle.
New Mills kept attacking at pace to try to get another goal but it was Benchill who scored next with a long range shot lobbing the keeper from near midfield.
The boys took awhile to settle again after conceding but after several Benchill attacks the defence battled like warriors to keep the score at one each; and just before half time New Mills took the lead again. Oli F this time finding the net with a confident finish just before half time.
Benchill started the second half strong, pushing up on kick outs, determined to get back in the game and it didn't take long for them to bring the game level again.
With 20 minutes to go; New Mills players knew they had to up their game to get a result today and that they did. Reverting to two at the back and pushing wider on a pitch that seemed as wide as it is long opened up some space for our runners to attack.
Jimmy always looking to push forward and never stopped running all day gave New Mills the lead again with a great finish after a powerful run.
New Mills’ fitness showed in the last 10 minutes with Oli F finding the net twice before full time whistle sounded to give the boys a well deserved win.
The ‘brainmat’ man of the match goes to Oli F today. Well done Oli F.
