Match report NMJFC U13s - 25/02/23

New Mills u13s v Chinley u13s

The Millers were at the Rec this week hosting Chinley.

The reverse fixture favoured Chinley a couple of weeks ago so the Millers knew they had to put a shift in.

We have been struggling for numbers lately with injuries, today was the same, bare 11 against a team who are league contenders.

Chinley must of thought they were just going to turn up and give us a footballing lesson but the boys had other ideas.

We set out the best we could and just wanted to compete and work as a team, keep our heads up and maybe snatch the odd chance on the counter.

The game kicked off and the Millers flew out of the traps, everybody on the pitch seemed to be switched on right from the off and it wasn’t long before the Millers took the lead.

Alfie slotted through the keepers legs to give us a deserved lead, Chinley didn’t really get going but managed to equalise against the run of play.

Soon after, a through ball from Harris absolutely ripped the Chinley back line apart for Alfie to run on to with a fine finish into the top right to give New Mills the lead, and deservedly so.

There was abit of a goal mouth scramble just before half time in the Millers box which saw Chinley poke the ball home to level 2-2 just in time for the break.

Team talk at half time was just to carry on what we’ve been doing in the first half, and most importantly to work as a team and talk to each other and to encourage and not get on each others backs.

The boys came out 2nd half and we’re probably even better than they were 1st half.

The Millers seemed like they were going to be the favourites to take the lead, creating a few chances and not really giving Chinley anything to test the New Mills back line and keeper.

Eventually the deadlock was broken with a fine header from Alfie to put the Millers on course to take all 3 points and give him his hat trick.

Chinley did create the odd chance but the Millers dug in and saw the game out to take all 3 points.

The boys this morning were absolutely fantastic, there was a real togetherness which is where we have struggled abit this season.

To see the parents and players smiling after the game was brilliant. It was one of the best performances I’ve seen from all the lads today and should be proud of yourselves.

Hopefully we have turned a corner and can carry on with this attitude and mentality, roll on next week.

Man of the match was given to the whole team as they were all brilliant.
