Started with 8 players and Mia offering to go in between the sticks who bravely cleared the ball away on several occasions, Mia has a incredible long range kick! Unfortunately Queensgate took advantage of us having 8 players and opened the score sheet within the first 5 minutes. A strong side who again played a great passing game leaving us chasing, same as last season, again found the back of the net.
2 goals in it at half time and with no subs the coaching side changed tactics and pushed back our newest member Annie-Mae to sit just in front of our fantastic backline trio enabling us to push Nieve up into an attacking position.
With renewed vigour in the second half and showing pure resilience Nieve then narrowed the scoreline which improved the energy all round. Grace had the best game she's had so far and also took a couple of shots from her left wing position, keep seizing opportunities Grace, you worked really hard & communicated well. Much to say about all of them, Mention to Lily's defending again, this girl does not like to be beaten by her opposing player and has taken on board travelling once she's won the ball back, it's great to see, covered well by Izzy and Mia. Izzy you held your position and covered superbly. Some more great saves by Tay too and much improved goal kicks, finding your wide players easily, well done.
Alissa had a real battle with her player on right wing, physical & well matched which made it difficult for her to make the runs and get the ball into the box but brief moments of drive on the ball, just beaten by the defenders in that final third. Queensgate again managed to get in front with a brilliant goal keeping the 2 goal difference but shortly after we were then awarded a penalty which our Captain Nieve took, which bounced off the keeper's gloves for her to explode off the penalty spot & follow it into the back of the net.
We've been working on playing between the lines and making those important runs in training and Del delivered that throughout the whole game, despite being flanked by their back line of 3 showing how strong she is under pressure. The Queensgate side were calm on the ball and moved it around the pitch tiring the New Mills girls out and with no subs they again took that 2 goal lead.
We couldn't really keep possession when we did win the ball today which left us battling and defending throughout, they were exhausted but lots of individual positives to take from today and their vocal support for each is really commendable! No shame, just beaten by the better team BUT we have to face them again so watch this space. Queensgate coach commenting afterwards we have improved so much since last season and I think we definitely made them work for it.
Special shout out to our newest signing Annie-Mae who proved to be an excellent addition to our team, positive energy and met every ball head on, literally, numerous headers out the area, drive & commitment throughout which earnt her well deserved player of the match. Well done!
