Match Report NMJFC u14s v High Lane u14s - 17/09/23
First game of the new campaign for the Millers this morning against High Lane, a fixture that usually ends up going towards the visitors.
The boys were all fired up and were keen to get started on a lovely morning down at the Rec.
The game started and the Millers seemed to get the better start of the teams. We were creating chances but not having the final bit of luck to hit the back of the net.
High Lane managed to balance the game out a little and against the run of play had the ball in the New Mills box which was swiftly finished in the top corner by one of our own players. High Lane couldn’t believe it as none of them cheered.
The Millers seemed to wobble a little bit and High Lane could smell the blood and carried on pressuring the Millers back 4.
Again, the Millers seemed to have a small lapse of concentration and High Lane made it 2-0.
The Millers kept their heads up and started again to play and press but the half time whistle went and that was that.
Quick team talk at half time we all knew what we had to do as we didn’t deserve to be behind at the break.
2nd half started and again it was the Millers looking to cause problems for the visitors. A ball over the top was met by Alfie who played in Joseph Tyrell to slot home to make it 2-1. With pretty much the same kind of ball, Alfie again used his pace and ran on to it, challenged the keeper and side footed into the net.
The next 20 mins were all action. New Mills conceded a penalty with the game poised at 2-2 the only person that could help us was Jack……High Lane player gave him the eyes…….great save from Jack but unfortunately the High Lane players were quicker off the mark to tap in and make it 3-2.
The Millers again dug in, the crowd were really getting behind the boys now and there were a few tasty tackles coming in from both teams. A hard-fought battle continued. New Mills received a free kick about 25 yards out, just off the throw in line in front of the coaches.
Up steps Drew…..absolute screamer straight over the keeper and into the right top corner…..absolute scenes on the Rec.
For the first game back, the lads really did themselves proud today. They deserved more than a draw but happy to come away with a point.
Shoutout to everybody today - all the players the parents and the coaches. Great start to the new season. We go again next week against Whaley Bridge.
