Match Report NMJFC U9s vs Alderley United FC Girls – 06/01/2024

Today was our first game of 2024, and the first time our girls have played together in nearly 3 weeks! But our under 9s arrived ready and raring to go for the first game back against Alderley United.

The game started relatively slow, with both teams finding their feet after the long break from football. Millie started the game in net, and as always, put in some excellent saves and gave the girls the confidence to push forward and threaten the opposition. Ava and Agnes started in defence and equally provided essential support, making some excellent tackles and passes to their teammates. Paige and Jessica were vigilant up front and played well together, finding some good positions and making some excellent passes to keep the pressure on Alderley’s defence.

Soon it was time for Annabella and Ebony to join in on the action, and suddenly the game dynamics changed, with Annabella’s ability to hound and badger her opponents, and Ebony’s strength behind the ball, we found ourselves taking charge of the game, and Paige’s relentless efforts upfront soon paid off with a remarkable run and shot on goal.

All the girls today demonstrated some superb runs with the ball – in particular, Paige, Agnes and Seren, and Emily played some terrific football in defence, kicking the ball out, making some strong passes and finding some wonderful positions. Meanwhile, Ava and Millie moved up and down the pitch effortlessly, opening up play and making an invaluable contribution to the team. The highlight of the second half was a brave and powerful run with the ball from Seren, following a beautiful pass from Ebony, resulting in a remarkable goal.

The girls played really well today, and demonstrated some exemplary teamwork and skill. This week’s player of the week went to Millie. We know that the goalkeeper position is not the preferred position for the majority of our girls, but we are keen to rotate this so all girls develop experience and competence in all positions. Millie had no problem stepping up to be goalie for the first half, and made some exceptional saves, taking control of the ball and passing it out with thought and precision. In the second half, she continued playing well, with some strong tackles and is such an invaluable player to our team – well done Millie, and well done to all our girls, a brilliant return from a long break, and exciting times ahead for this team, for sure!
