Match Report NMJFC U9s vs Marple Athletic JFC U9s – 25/11/23
Today’s match very nearly didn’t go ahead, when we heard the disappointing news last night that our scheduled opponents had to cancel. However, our girls and coaches didn’t want this to be a wasted opportunity, so turned up, as scheduled, with the intention to play a friendly match against each other. Just as we were about to start however, another team (from the league above us), found themselves in a similar situation, so we decided to step up and play a friendly against Marple Athletic – a team we have played before, but faced a heavy defeat.
This time, despite the bitterly cold temperature (I clocked it at a freezing -3°), we decided to get as many girls on the pitch as we could and played an incredibly competitive 6-a-side friendly against Marple Athletic, with the remaining girls taking on some extra coaching sessions on the side pitch to keep warm.
The girls do us proud each week, and this week was no exception. Starting our line-up, we had Agnes in net, Ava and Emily in defence, Annabella in mid-field and Jessica and Seren up front. The recent focus of our training sessions has been about spreading out and finding good positions, and passing the ball into space, and the girls’ put this well and truly into practice today. Ava demonstrated some exceptional skill on the ball, making some good runs and passes, Emily found some excellent spaces and made some fantastic runs with the ball when she had space.
Unfortunately, a powerful ball from the opposition took our goalie Agnes out for a short time, but Ebony stepped up and made some excellent saves. Agnes soon got back to her feet and demonstrated admirable courage, returning to goal and making some good saves. Millie, as always, got thoroughly stuck in on the action, playing in defence and making some phenomenal through-balls to her teammates. This week we saw some strong shots on goal from a number of the girls, including Ebony, Jessica and Annabella. Paige as always, demonstrated determination and skill in taking a number of shots, one from as far away as the half-way line!
But it was Seren that we awarded Player of the week to. Today Seren was thirsty for a goal and put on an excellent performance, demonstrating skill and aptitude she eagerly took the through-balls delivered to her from her teammates and ran with conviction, and had a number of one-on-one encounters with the opposition’s keeper.
The girls’ grit and fortitude really paid off today, they dominated the game and put in an excellent performance. The opposition’s manager even commented on how well our girls have come on, since we last played against this Marple side - only 8 weeks ago! Hearing comments like this is testament that our girl’s are growing from strength to strength, and their attitude to the game, and dealing with all that is thrown at them is truly inspirational!
Well done girls!
