Today was our last match of 2023, and we said farewell to the year with belter of a match, against a strong and undefeated side of Stockport County Ladies U9s.
Starting our line up this week we had Ava in goal, Seren and Emily in defence and Annabella and Ebony upfront. The game went off to a relatively slow start, with the busy festive period possibly taking its toll on the girls this week.
Emily was our North Star, arriving to the game switched on and put in some exceptional tackles, being a constant threat to the opposition.
When Jessica came on, she likewise demonstrated her admirable understanding of the game, and picked out some good passes to keep our possession of the ball, and Ava, in goal put in some great saves from a powerful Stockport side.
Half-time must have switched the girls into gear, and they started the second half with gusto. Here we saw Seren take her stint in goal, supported by Millie, who made some exceptional tackles and who cleared the ball off the line several times. Ebony and Emily worked remarkably hard, both dropping back and putting in some fantastic tackles, and then pushing up front, to keep the pressure on. All the girls worked well in their positions, looking behind to see where the threats were and dropping back to mark up their opponents.
Our player of the week from last week, Paige, had at least two exceptional shots on goal this week.
Annabella absolutely hounded the opposition, and had her first shot on goal, and showed the strong Stockport side that we’re a side to be reckoned with. One of the most noteworthy moments of the game demonstrated some remarkable teamwork and passing skills, with Annabella passing the ball to Jessica, who passed a through ball to Emily, who then skilfully curved the ball into the corner of the goal. An astounding finish to some excellent play from our young New Mills side!
Seren in net put on a fantastic show, making some exceptional and brave saves, including one at point-blank range. And Ava, after her stretch in goal, in the second half picked up the ball and ran up and down the wing with intensity.
Emily’s performance today was formidable, from start to finish, and her goal was the icing on the cake. Executed with such skill and precision, she was the worthy winner of the player of the week trophy this week. Well done Emily!
As the last match report of the year, I would just like to thank all the girls and their parents and all their supporters for all they have achieved this year. We only formed as a team 6 months ago, and today we were playing against an incredibly strong Stockport side. The girls’ grit and determination, and downright eagerness to play are attributes that can’t be taught, they are instinctive, and it’s been an absolute pleasure to be part of this team. I couldn’t be prouder of what the girls have achieved this year, and I cannot wait to see what’s in store for next year. 2024 the year of the New Mills U9 girls, bring it on!
