New Mills kicked off with the autumnal sun low in the sky and a stiff breeze giving cause for concern to Dillan in goal. C&G used this astutely to their advantage. A stunning save by Dillan being the pick of the early encounters. It was a corner that unstuck the Millers in the end and allowed C&G to take what was at that point a deserved lead.

The goal however seemed exactly what they needed to spur them on. Cary’s tenacity became infectious and New Mills started to win the 50/50s. Ross and Stan steadied the boat, Joel was getting on the ball. Some lovely play down the left between Lewis and Ben gave Toby a chance, it was well defended and trickled on to the post, but George got to the ball before anyone else to slot it away. They were level. Gritty play from both teams saw it level at half time.

Could New Mills make the most of the change of sides? It seemed they would, with an increased amount of possession. But C&G were holding firm. Ben was enjoying more time on the ball, Lewis and Joel were pulling the strings in the middle and Toby had found his grove chasing down players and taking them on in equal measure. Then Olly B sent Lewis through the middle with a beautifully weighted pass. One on one with the keeper saw their keeper come out on top this time, but would it be the last.

In a complete reversal of the first half, C&G now came back into the match with some lovely passing moves. And it was from one of these that saw them take the lead with only a few minutes left on the clock.

Time was ticking away, a couple of corners came to nothing, then with time seemingly up Toby went on one last foray into the heart of their defence. He took it past 2 before being sandwiched just outside the box. Free kick. Lewis range. And cometh the hour cometh the man, with sheer aplomb he dispatched the ball over the keeper and in to the far corner. Jubilant scenes for the Millers, despair for C&G. Kick off and a couple of passes saw the final whistle blow. A draw a deserved result in a thoroughly entertaining encounter.

Man of the match went to Toby for some brilliant passing, dribbling and stamina. Goals George and Lewis

Well done the Millers.
