New Mills Under 16’s were comfortable victors in their Divisional Cup Group A game against Poynton, on the day that the team was presented with the Stockport Metro League Division One trophy in front of their adoring supporters.
After defeating Richmond Sky’s in their previous group game The Millers were strong favourites going into the game and they lived up to the billing, indeed they could have been several goals ahead within the first five minutes. The deadlock was broken on nine minutes when Joel Boyes was tripped in the box and Harry Wyatt made no mistake from the spot. Attacking midfielder Joel Boyes fired in a quick double on the 20 minute mark as The Millers seized control and he completed his hat-trick on the half hour mark to send his side into the break well ahead.
Further goals were added in the second half by Alex Capraro, Harvey Smith, Fred Valter, Frank Woodrow 3 (taking him to 27 for the season in 13 games) and a double by Boyes making it five in the game for him, and completing the scoring. With a midweek derby against Whaley Bridge and then another local Derby against Chapel Town next Sunday, The Millers are in good shape as they look to progress to a cup final and add to the two trophies that they have won already this season.
Nathan Lees made a welcome return to The Millers side after a spell on the sidelines and Adam Hooper produced his best performance of the season so far in central defence, while Wyatt along with his sidekick Kit Maddox dictated the game from midfield. Jake Brooks was destined not to score, seeing the Poynton keeper produce several fine saves to keep out his efforts, yet he was still responsible for the assist for six of the goals.
Man of the Match: Joel Boyes
