Match report NMJFC Under 9s Falcons - 02/04/23

The final league game of the season at Glossopdale and the Falcons were up against Chapel Town U9, arguably the strongest team in the league.

The Falcons have made great progress this season and with cup finals day a couple of weeks away, this was a brilliant test for the team.

Sadly, the Falcons lost Rowan through injury just before this game. (Hope you have a speedy recovery Rowan and fingers crossed you’ll be back in time for cup finals day!)

As the game kicked-off, the Falcons started brightly. Pressing the opposition, keeping their shape and passing the ball very nicely. But as the Falcons pushed forward, through balls from Chapel saw their pace get through on goal for a couple of successive attacks.

Not letting that affect the team, the Falcons stuck to their plan and continued to press forward. Some fantastic passing between Alfie, Archie and Lucas tore through the Chapel defence and now a wave of Falcons chances followed, forcing the opposition goalkeeper to make a number of saves.

The Falcons were on top and when Chapel tried to play the ball forward, Poppy and Henry in defence had started to work out their forward passes and made some excellent blocks. And when Chapel did get through, the Falcons goalkeeper Oscar produced a couple of brilliant saves.

Half-time came and a well deserved rest. More of the same were the instructions from the coaches and the Falcons were ready for the second half.

The Falcons started on top, this time Angus down the right hand side was finding lots of space and making some excellent forward runs. A succession of Falcons corners again testing the Chapel goalkeeper and the crossbar also keeping the ball out of the net.

As the second half went on, the game was wide open. As the Falcons were committed going forward, when Chapel got a break, they pushed forwards in numbers and were clinical in front of goal. The introduction of Fletcher up front pulled the Chapel defence meaning more Falcons chances right up to the final whistle.

No goals today for the Falcons, but they created more chances than ever. Just one of those days!

Special mention to todays captain, Henry. A huge challenge for Henry playing in defence today coming up against a quick Chapel side. But he did great, with a number of tackles, cutting out through balls and passes up the pitch.

But todays player of the match trophy went to Poppy. An absolutely awesome display today from start to finish. Poppy was a rock at the back, knowing she would have to get physical to make tackles and shield the ball - and she did this perfectly. Her reading of the game gets better all the time and today she knew when to step up, stand off and make forward runs. Poppy was brilliant today and thoroughly deserved the trophy.

A huge test to end the season, but every player today can hold their head up and be proud they put in an excellent display.

Well done Falcons - looking forward to cup finals day now!
