This season will be a lot of new experiences for the U7s and another new team was faced this week, Inter Cheadle East.
We had worked in training on our passing and focusing on making sure the pass was to feet and hard enough to our team mate. We wanted to see how many times we could pass the ball to our teammates during the game and how many consecutive passes we could make.
As it was the first weekend of half-term, we were missing our safe-hands, Kingsley in goal so as usual our captain for the week would play in goal, Jude took the gloves to start.
Lily would start on the right with Thomas on the left.
Kit would play central defence with Logan and Elliott playing further forward.
Our game-changers this week were Alistair and Leo ready to play their part and make a difference to the team.
The game kicked off and as always with our U7s, a great game took place. There was goals, tackles and great passing moves by both teams. Inter Cheadle showed they are a good team, well organised with some good players, but these Mini-Millers ain’t half bad either.
In the first half Jude was doing everything in goal, making sure kept as many goals out as he could. Although it is not as familiar a position to Jude, he was buzzing to be captain and diving around for the team. Thomas was at his tackling best but what Thomas was trying this week was getting his head up and playing the ball to his teammates. His confidence is growing a little each week and won’t let other players push him around anymore.
Kit was positionally great this week, he kept wanting to drive forward but he stayed back as much as possible to cover to make sure Jude had cover. He also showed his dead ball skills again with a superb free-kick.
Lily goes at every game with the same enthusiasm and this week was no different. She also is growing in confidence in her abilities and is not shy to get stuck into challenges but also is getting her head up to play the ball to her team mates.
Logan was driving forward with the ball and linking up the play from front to back. His work rate is extremely high and is just as determined to battle back as fly forward. He not only provides goals for the team but his creativity is also growing and created more chance than anyone this week.
Elliott showed his teamwork again this week, tracking back but passing the ball to his teammates as well.
Elliott also got his first assist this week with a great pass to Logan.
Time for our game-changers to make the difference and Leo set about that straight away. Fresh off of scoring his first goals last week, he slotted home again this week. Leo’s strength is in his defending but is gaining confidence in other aspects of his game each week, and his ability to finish is really showing. Alistair made a huge difference as he drove the team forward and pressed high up the field to try and win the ball back for the Mini-Millers.
At half-time, we continued to emphasise passing and working together to drive the ball forward. Jude would pass the gloves to Lily for the second half and she would be as active between the sticks as Jude was.
The second half was much the same as the first with Jude playing further forward and battling hard. His determination shows each week and although he is not the biggest in stature, his grit, drive and smile certainly make up for it.
More of the same from the whole team and by the end of the game both U7s team left the field happy after a match that was action packed. Each week our Mini-Millers take more steps on their football journey and develop a little bit each week. That is what is most encouraging to us coaches and parents.
Well done Mini-Millers we go again next week…
