New Mills Under 18’s 4-1 Richmond Rovers Sky’s
The Millers Under 18’s began their season with a victory, but as in the opening game of 2020/21 the result flattered the performance as the home side struggled to play their usual slick passing game.
The visitors certainly enjoyed the better of the early exchanges, forcing The Millers onto the back foot and creating several opportunities before Kit Maddox and Nathan Lees finally took some control of the game around the half hour mark. Lees saw an effort tipped onto the bar by the Sky’s goalkeeper, while he also produced a couple of unorthodox but fine saves with his feet to deny Brooks and Maddox. Finally, as half time approached, the deadlock was broken a long free kick from Harvey Smith headed home by Jake Brooks to give The Millers the lead.
The goal on half time should have settled the home side but it was the visitors who started the second the stronger, equalising with a well worked goal within five minutes of the restart.
The sides were level for just seven minutes as The Millers launched a long ball forward, Joel Boyes nudged past the goalkeeper and Frank Woodrow forced the ball home from close range.
On 72 minutes the best move of the match saw Harry Wyatt feed Brooks who slipped in Lees to make it 3-1 before a Harvey Smith thunderbolt made it four with six minutes to go.
Three points for The Millers but they will be looking for much slicker, more convincing performances in the weeks to come.
