The Hornets had their first New Mills Derby of the season and we were up against our mates from The Bees. Most of these kids have been training together since they were 5 or 6 years old and they absolutely love it when they get the opportunity to play a proper match against each other.
Derby Day can often be a frosty affair and the weather didn’t let us down. It was below zero overnight, so we were all waiting for the pitch to defrost and once we had the all clear - the warm-up could begin. Oliver B & Coach Filippo were away so we had to pull in some reinforcements to allow the team the possibility of having a sub…..
Step up Stanley from the NMJFC U8’s. He started both halves on bench but when he did get his chance on the pitch, he seemed to fit in perfectly. We also had the addition of Rob B as a coach and the boys really listened to his advice and we hit the ground running!
The Hornets maintained the same formation they have been using since stepping up to 7-A-Side football and they looked in complete control as the knocked the ball around quickly and began to create some good attacks. Albie was electric and was creating opportunities for others as well as himself and found the back of the net twice in the opening minutes. Ollie M was also benefiting from the passing game and as the attacks began to build from the boys at the back, Ollie M made sure he was in the right places as that final ball was put into him. He grabbed a couple of great goals before the Half-Time break.
Second-Half – We asked the boys to show us how they can get every Hornet involved in each attack and they listened and produced the goods. Finley & Frankie (our defenders) both stepped up and added to the scoreline.
Ronan, who is in inscintillating form, dropped back into defence and at times he appeared to be playing like a quarter back in the NFL as he put some fantastic long range passes into dangerous positions.
Then it was Stanley’s turn and he got a well-deserved debut goal.
Oliver L was having another great game and was playing the ball confidently out from defence and linking up with the forward players. At the back Fenn was called into action. Some games, Fenn can spend large parts of the match not being too involved but when called upon he is always ready. Another one of them Fenn.
The icing on the cake was when Ollie M bagged his Hat-Trick 💥 💥 💥
Fantastic team performance and POTM, picked by our guest coach went to our newest recruit – Stanley 🏆who fit into the team wonderfully and has a very mature football brain for somebody so young.
An extra special mention to the another Stanley who was between the sticks for our opponents. He was brilliant and thoroughly enjoyed himself. Time after time he produced some great saves and more amazingly, he never once let his head go down!! Top work Stan!
