Match Report New Mills Juniors U9s vs Inter Cheadle South U9s; 07/12/24 Stockport Sports Village.

The U9s would be back at Stockport Sports Village this week for a wet and blustery game against familiar opponents in Inter Cheadle South.

Every game we have played over the last 2 years against them have been superb games of football with them being tight affairs.

New Mills would be two players down this week with Teddy and Pavak unavailable.

They would have to get through the game without subs but nothing this team hasn’t done before.

With a new month, we have a new captain in place with James taking the armband for December.

The Mini-Millers would start with James in goal with Charlie T and Rhys as centre backs in front.  Charlie J would play as centre midfield with Stanley on the left and Jackson on the right with Dylan playing through the middle.

The game kicked off in difficult conditions which would only get worse as the game wore on.  Inter moved the ball around well but New Mills kept firm at the back with some solid defending from the centre halves.

James was called upon a couple of times and did well to make some good saves down low.

Stanley was trying to get into the game as was Jackson on the right but Inter Cheadle did their best to stifle the wide players.

After early pressure, New Mills started to weather the storm and managed to find their passes.  Charlie J was doing well to disrupt in the middle of the park and was distributing the ball well.

The forward three were starting to link up more with Dylan getting more of the ball and trying to carry it forward.

Jackson was industrious as ever on the right with Stanley having joy pushing past his opposite number.

Further New Mills pressure final told with a good forward ball from Rhys which Stanley latched onto, jinked past his defender and rifled home. This galvanised Inter Cheadle more and they came back hard to try respond quickly however the defence and keeper stood firm.

Rhys was cutting out long balls forward and trying to play link up with Jackson and Stanley.

Charlie T was cutting out attacks, getting blocks on shots and hustling and harrying as much as possible.

James was called on again to keep Inter Cheadle out and did well with further strikes at goal.

Half time came and while the team and supporters caught their breath in the storm, the coaches set to galvanise the team and make a few tweaks to the team. James would move to centre midfield with Charlie J going upfront and Dylan taking the gloves for the second half.

We spoke with the players about plenty of energy, pressing, not allowing shots and focus on our quick passing game.

We got an amazing response in the second half as the players came out fighting.  The great credit to the how the team played is Dylan had less to do in the second half in goal than James did in the first. James brought new energy into the midfield and Charlie J rather than dropping deep like Dylan, played higher up the field and stretched the defence well.  This was shown by a great move from back to front with Charlie T, James and Stanley playing through to Charlie J to get his goal from a great flowing move.

The passing game was great to see and this was starting from the back.

Both Charlie T and Rhys were building attacks either wide or through James in the middle.

As the game wore on, James dropped into defence with Rhys pushing into midfield.  Rhys brought his calmness on the ball again to the midfield linking the play well and playing some great balls through to Charlie J which, given the conditions got blown away from him.

Jackson never gave up on the right and was rewarded for his industry with a superb goal.

Stanley crossed a great ball to the far post, a run from Charlie J had taken the defenders away with Jackson left to finish, oh so cleverly with a cheeky airborne backheel.

After a superb effort from all involved, the game finished with both sides having given everything to a superb game of football to watch.

Player of the week this week was such a tough call with so many great performances, especially in the second half from the team.  It was decided though that for his determination, his drive, his bravery, his willingness to keep trying and never give up – our full game centre half Charlie T was awarded the trophy to his surprise and great delight.

Well done U9s, great team performance which even Darragh could not dampen, no matter how hard he tried.
