After an extended break from matches and training, the New Mills girls returned to competitive football with enthusiasm and energy, ready to take on Bollington in what turned out to be a thoroughly enjoyable and engaging game. Despite the freezing temperatures, our girls were determined to shake off the rust and showcase the skills and teamwork that have become their hallmark.

The match began with Annabella taking her position in goal, where she displayed great composure and confidence. Her ability to play out from the back and pick the right passes set the tone for the team’s build-up play, ensuring that New Mills could transition smoothly from defence to attack.

In front of Annabella, the defensive duo of Poppy and Ebony proved to be a formidable partnership. Poppy, stationed on the right, and Ebony, on the left, complemented each other perfectly, working in unison to relieve any pressure on Annabella. Their positional awareness, timely interceptions, and strong clearances prevented Bollington from creating many meaningful chances.

The midfield trio of Paige, Millie, and Ava worked tirelessly throughout the first half, demonstrating a perfect balance of defensive discipline and attacking creativity. Paige, on the left, consistently drove forward with the ball, while Millie, in the center, orchestrated the play with her calm decision-making and ability to find space. Ava, on the right, displayed incredible energy, making overlapping runs and linking up effectively with her teammates. Together, the three midfielders overwhelmed Bollington’s defence, pushing them into uncomfortable positions and ensuring that New Mills maintained control of the game.

Seren, leading the line up front, was a constant thorn in Bollington’s side. Her relentless pressing, intelligent movement, and decision-making kept the opposition’s defence on their toes throughout the first half. Seren’s most notable contribution came when she made a determined tackle on a Bollington defender, winning the ball in a dangerous area and in doing so setting up Millie for a brilliantly taken goal. The move epitomised the team’s hard work and cohesion, as well as their ability to capitalise on opportunities under pressure.

The first substitute of the game, Emily, wasted no time in making a significant impact. Her work ethic as always, was exceptional, as she tackled tenaciously, tracked back to help the defence, and pushed forward with the ball whenever the opportunity arose. Emily’s versatility and determination made her an invaluable asset to the team, and her efforts were a key factor in maintaining New Mills’ dominance. Agnes, the second substitute, brought composure and precision to the midfield. Her well-timed tackles and accurate passing helped the team maintain their rhythm, and she played a crucial role in connecting defence with attack. Finally, Jessica was deployed in defence and delivered a composed performance.

The second half saw Ebony take over goalkeeping duties, and she rose to the challenge with confidence and skill. Despite not being called into action frequently, she made several notable saves and demonstrated excellent decision-making when collecting the ball. Her assured performance between the posts allowed the outfield players to push forward with confidence.

Annabella, moving into a defensive role, continued to impress with her tenacity and presence at the back. Her ability to read the game and step in at critical moments provided an extra layer of security for the team. Emily, Ava, Poppy, and Millie maintained their relentless energy and drive throughout the second half, showing no signs of fatigue. They consistently pushed forward with the ball, creating opportunities and keeping Bollington pinned in their own half. Paige also stood out with some excellent runs and precise passing, further adding to the team’s attacking momentum.

As the final whistle blew, Emily was named Player of the Week for her outstanding all-round performance. Her ability to adapt to any position, combined with her relentless effort and determination, made her a standout player on the day. Her eagerness to contribute wherever she was needed and her unwavering commitment to the team’s success were truly commendable.

Although this was the first game back after a long hiatus, the New Mills girls showed no signs of rust or hesitation. They played with their trademark enthusiasm, teamwork, and skill, delivering a performance filled with positives and setting a strong foundation for the matches to come. From solid defensive work to creative attacking play, every member of the team contributed to what was an excellent all-round performance. It was a joy to watch, and the girls can be proud of their efforts on a bitterly cold day.
