First game back for The Hornets since 13th December! Time to blow off the cobwebs, run off those Xmas chocolates and get back to loving football on Saturdays! Special mention to The Butterworths, who hosted the annual Hornets Christmas Party 🧑🎄 It was a great day & night as the kids had a team-bonding session and the parents got blind-drunk as usual. We all recharged our batteries after that and now we are ready to go again.
We also found out who we'd play in the next round of the knockout cup . . . . Reddish NE Greens! Last years winners and very familar oppsition for our lads after multiple encounters last season. Definitely something to work towards as we enter the business end of the season. THIS IS OUR YEAR 🏆
Back to the weekend and 'New Year - New Hornets'. A quick start was paramount after our tough introduction to the 9v9 season back in September. This is something we have discussed as a group and as coaches, we requested more intensity and desire from the moment we kick-off. Oliver L looked ready. He'd had a tough gig on loan for The Blacks pre-xmas and we wanted him to move on quickly. He was on top form and never put a foot wrong. We managed to get 'The Shady Goal' first half and Oliver settled in with his hoodie on and totally dominated his box whilst making some great saves too.
Infront of him was Finners, who made his presence known. The opposition coaches were paying him compliments throughout. With Oliver B to the right and Callum to the left, this defence are forming a relationship now that looks as formidible as any I've seen at this age group.
With a license to bomb forward and take risks, either Frankie or Ronan simply slip in to cover them and they were causing wreaking havoc all game. Finners & Oliver were like warriors, Callum is a little more reserved but just as influencial. Cal is as cool as cucmber when playing for us and makes defending look so simple. You can tell he has Irish in him, he's like our version of Dennis Irwin (Google it Cal).
Speaking of an Irish influence, Ronan The Rocket is back! He looks so comfortible again playing in the middle, something none of us ever thought would be his postion. Ronan has carried in injury for a bit now but after getting the all clear, his confidence has gone through the roof and his short passing, decision making and timing seemed to have all alined.
Partnered with Frankie The Engine-Room, these two completely bossed the game and dominated possesion.
In atttack we had Ollie M & Charlie playing wide with Albie going through the middle. The boys were in fine form. Massively helped by the defensive players working the ball wide and both Ollie M & Charlie were creating good chances for our lone striker Albie to finish. Our Maestro celebrated his birthday over the Xmas break and he manged to find three more reasons to celebrate on Saturday as he bagged himself a hat-trick! We sometimes forget the quality this lad has but he was in the zone and everything was raw and honest. Tracking back, getting stuck and laying the ball wide to include others on our attacks.
Great start to the New Year! Great effort from all involved, especially as we didn't have any subs availible. POTM went to Albie 🏆 for a fantastic hat-trick ⚽⚽⚽ and some brilliant unselfish play.
Great to be back 💛🖤
