New Mills U16s hosted Mountfield Rovers for the first game of the season. New Mills got off to a really strong start with a campaign of fluid fast attacks but unable to find the back of the net. The 36th minute saw a controversial decision go in Mountfield’s favour, with a penalty sending the keeper the wrong way and into the bottom right-hand corner. The second half started very 50/50 with both teams stringing together good attacks with equally good defending. A free kick awarded to New Mills some 35yards out was struck to perfection by Cian Oakes evening up the score to 1-1. Later on in the half, Mountfield struck a free kick from 25-yards only to be denied by Fred Valter’s head. A fast counter attack brought New Mills’ winner by a Callum HK & Harvey Smith double-act with Callum slotting home the decider to give New Mills the 3-points.
