Match Report - NMJU9 Falcons - Sunday 23rd April
This was the one… the one the Falcons had been working towards all season… HPJFL Cup Finals Day at Buxton!
The Falcons were drawn against our friends, the NMJU9 Hawks, playing for the Axe Edge Moor Cup.
As the Falcons arrived at Silverlands early to cheer on the NMJU9 Eagles, you could feel the atmosphere and energy in the air. It was great conditions for a cup final.
It was quickly game time and both teams emerged from the tunnel, fired up for this one. In previous games between the teams this season, the Hawks have shown how good they can be and the Falcons needed to ready from the first whistle.
Usually it’s the Falcons on the front foot from the start, but this time it was the Hawks with the first chances of the game, putting Poppy and Henry under pressure in the Falcons defence and goalkeeper Oscar having to make some early saves.
As the first half went on the Falcons settled down, started to win some tackles and loose balls and started to create chances of their own. Alfie was starting to pick up the ball in midfield and using Archie and Angus on both wings to put the Hawks under pressure now. The Hawks came back, with Rowan coming on for Henry in defence, those fresh legs were vital in matching the pace of their attacks.
Half-time came and a much needed rest. The message to the Falcons was clear - keep doing exactly what you did in the first half, but be stronger in the tackle and win those second balls.
The second half started exactly how the first one ended. Both teams having to dig deep, pushing themselves that bit extra to try and get over the line. Lucas was a great example of this, dropping deep to help win possession and driving forward with the ball at his feet. But the Falcons still tried to keep passing and moving the ball into the spaces to create more chances.
The pace of the game never dropped and it was end to end right until the last minute. When the final whistle came, both teams came together to congratulate each other on a brilliant cup final, that was a great advert for New Mills Juniors.
There were two teams that made this such a good game to watch and huge congratulations to the Hawks for more than playing their part in that. They were fantastic today.
In the end, every single player on the Falcons team played their part today. They were amazing from start to finish, never let their heads drop and kept battling for each other for the full game.
Brilliant Falcons goals today from Archie ⚽️⚽️⚽️ and Lucas ⚽️⚽️
Special mention to the Falcons goalkeeper, Oscar, who was made the official Player of the Match, which was decided by the match official.
In the end, it was an amazing moment for today’s captain Poppy to lead the team up to collect the Axe Edge Moor Cup and lift this in front of the parents, friends and spectators below.
Super proud of them all, not just for today, but all season where they have really grown and developed as a team. Well done Falcons - you deserved this today.
