The Millers made several changes for this game to both the team shape and the personnel used for the fixture. Stan covered for Archie in goal, with Bobby covering for Alfie. Daniel came in at centre-back to partner Bobby, and Greeny came in to partner Mayson up top.
The Millers started the game well and were dominating midfield through India and Jess. Darragh and Bertie were a threat early on and put several good crosses into the box for Mayson and Greeny to attack. Cole and Fletcher were coping well with the Whaley wide men to prevent any long-range shots on goal.
Darragh opened the scoring with a well-taken angled drive into the corner of the goal after a fantastic through ball from India found him in space.
The Millers could and should have built on the lead, but several good saves and last-ditch blocks prevented the lead from being increased. Whaley then, against the run of play, equalised with a long-range shot which flew into the top corner of the goal, leaving Stan with no chance. Whaley were now on top and pressing for the lead, and scored a second after a long ball forward sailed over the Millers’ back line and was calmly finished by the Whaley striker. The Millers reacted well but could not find an equaliser before the break.
The message at half-time was clear: the team had to keep trying to play our football on what was a very sticky surface.
After a period of controlled pressure from the Millers, the equaliser came and was well deserved. After some slick interplay on the right, the ball found Mayson, who laid it off perfectly to Bertie, who duly smashed the ball into the top corner of the goal.
The Millers were now looking for the winner and the game became far more open, as both teams struck the woodwork in search of a winner.
Both teams tried to score the winner, but in the end a draw seemed a fair reflection of the play that the spectators had enjoyed.
The coaches all praised the resilience of the team, both in their defending and their overall will to try and take something from the match.
Players of the match went to Stan for going in goal at short notice and doing a fantastic job, and also to India, who has been outstanding in midfield for a number of weeks now and continues to grow and thrive in this role with every game she plays.
Well done, Stan and India.
