The Hornets were up against last year’s Metro League No.1 team and in the build up to this fixture the oppositions coaching staff made us aware of this. They are all tough games now for our boys as they have reached a level where they are being genuinely tested and having to improve. This is exactly what we need and the lads came out fighting on Saturday, prepared to do the hard graft and they had more grit about them.
It has to be said, this Inter Cheadle team are the best side we have played this season so far. They passed the ball around in triangles and The Hornets, attempting another new formation were being over-loaded in midfield but the boys dug-deep and it was great to watch us battle for the ball back. Even more impressive was our super-star goalie Fenn. I have no idea what he had for breakfast on Saturday but please repeat this every matchday. Fenn has been tested more than most in the new league as the standard as gone up and he never lets us down. This performance propelled our goalie to another level and without him, The Hornets would have been out of the game very early on.
Attack after attack, wave after wave, last seasons champs were displaying a superior level of football but on every occasion, Fenn was matching the best they could throw at us! An outstanding performance from our colossal goalkeeper.
Every single Hornet was fighting for the ball and in attack we were creating patterns of play that on another day, would end in a goal. The boys stuck at it and were extremely unlucky when Frankie’s free-kick from the throw-in line crashed into the joint of the goal. It was another defender who created our next opportunity. Oliver L this time, advancing into the other half and being urged on by our parents to shoot, fired one-off with his left-foot and it was well saved by the Inter Cheadle goalie, who was also in good form. The Hornets refused to give in, creating chances and getting shots-off.
It was also proving to be a very physical encounter and once again the boys didn’t surrender and matched them up with strong tackles and showed a side of our physical game that was impressive but importantly, genuinely needed. Albie epitomised this and even though he was being targeted by the opposition, he never shrank. In fact, he was getting better with every challenge and grew in confidence. Unfortunately, he was becoming too much to handle and took a real tough challenge that would end up with our maestro taking a trip to A&E. Get well soon Albs. Hopefully, you’ll be back scoring goals before Xmas.
A real collective team effort. Every single one of you upped your game from last weekend and if we fight like that every weekend we will be there or there abouts, come the end of the season.
Finally, we had to move Fenn out of Woodley quickly, before one of the Manchester clubs came knocking on our door for him. The easiest POTM award ever. Fenn 🏆 you were outrageously good! I think we are going to need a few more performances like that in the near future my man.
Great game to watch ⚽️
