We were blessed with some September Sunshine in Woodley for The Hornets second game in The Metro League. We'll embrace the good weather as we know how unpredictable it can be at this time of year. Just like the weather, we had no indication of the what is ahead in this league and as coaches we have no idea of the forecast as we don't know what we are up against, but we are loving the challenge and it's brilliant to see the kids being tested in an environment they are not familiar with.
This weekend we faced Richmond Rovers and The Hornets were playing a really good side and it was anyone's guess to predict the outcome after a very evenly matched first-half. These are bigger pitches so the players had to work harder and Ronan was our shining light! His strength & desire was beaming through like the autumn sun and he was displaying a real maturity in his decision making.
Upfront, Ollie M was running the opposition ragged and the combinations between Oliver B & Albie was getting better with every attack. Charlie was getting involved too and the boys were dominating.
Second-half – After a quick chat with The Coaches, mostly about reminding the boys of the quality they have in their ranks, we were off & firing!
Rocket epitomised every aspect of this and he was setting up our attacks. First to benefit was Albie, who desrved a goal. It crept in but we will take it!
At the back we were solid ...... again. Fenn was being tested and gave his all! Frankie & Finners were not in the mood for taking any prisoners. Oliver L was on fire & up to the task, even out-skilling our opponents when bringing the ball out from the back! Kai ended up doing a shift at the back and he was incredible. Disciplined & decisive, nobody got past him and we may have found his favoured position?!
When you’re safe at the back, you can be more confident in attack. “Make hay when the sun shines” was the call from the sidelines and The Hornets did exactly that with the most tremendous team goal! Fenn rolled it to Frankie, Frankie played it out wide to Rocket, Ronan was decisive as he knocked it into Albie, Maestro then beat his man, squared it to Oliver B, who then finished a perfect move. I’m biased but the boys looked absolutely sensational!
The icing on the cake was provided by Oliver L. He hit a thunderbolt from distance and left the keeper with no chance! An absolute belter! The lads were in their element and the confidence was oozing and clear for all to see.
It is at these moments each individual needs to work hard, tracking back for the team and ensure we protect our goal. Fenn was in outstanding form and was simply incredible!
The final was greeted with smiles and The Hornets had put in a proper shift.
POTM went to Albie – He’s brilliance & unselfishness created the magic needed.
