NMJFC U9's Hornets v Buxton Athletic -14/4/24 - High Peak Cup Final

The biggest game of the year awaited The Hornets! After the most immaculate season ever imaginable, the boys were ready to complete Mission Impossible!

We were up against Buxton Athletic in our Cup Final, by far & away our toughest test all season and both teams are very evenly matched and as coaches we needed to prepare the boys.

Finners is a master in the art of defending and showed a level of discipline, well beyond his years! It’s self-control & confidence, with a level of belief...  every single one of the team adopted Finley’s tough attitude this weekend.

First half was tense and Buxton were dominating in a very physical match up. The Hornets are well equipped at the back and Finners, Frankie, Ronan & Oliver L made sure we protected Fenn in nets. When called upon, Fenn was outstanding! His footwork was on-point and we were absorbing the pressure and began hitting Buxton on the attack.

This team of ours have become very good in possession and they weren’t listening to us and instead, they were going for a goal but the Buxton goalie was in tremendous form and we just couldn’t beat him! The final attack of the half was once again pushed away and we were beginning to wonder if the ball would ever go in?! “Corner” said the ref….

Up steps Albie. On the receiving end of the most perfect flighted delivery from our Rocket – He attempts an over-head kick, at head height…. IN A LEAGUE WHERE YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO HEADER (It’s an FA Trial). Boom 💥 The greatest goal 🪄 you could ever have the privilege of watching. The boys had their noses in front and we spent almost the entire half-time break in silence. We only spoke to remind the boys that you need to express yourselves!

Second-half wasn’t easy but The Hornets had grown in confidence and it was clear to see the level our lads have now got to. Oliver L was taking no prisoners and even when he got injured, he made sure he could return to the game & keep the boys on top. Oliver B is our warrior! Oliver was everywhere whilst keeping the ball under perfect control. Setting up the attacks is what he does best.

The lads dug-deep and Fenn was being tested but never took his eyes off the ball. On the counter-attack, it was simply phenomenal. Frankie was everywhere! Blocking the Buxton attack and setting up our forward players.

Maestro grabbed another from one of Ronan’s corners and then completed his ‘Match-Ball Performance’ with another lovely finish ⚽️⚽️⚽️

Ollie M showed a new side of his game and was tracking back and making big, important tackles. Going forward Ollie M was electric! He was being helped by Ronan who is in the form of his life! Left-Back, Left-Wing, Upfront & Sweeper. Our Rocket has it all in abundance & and is the form of his life right now.

Not finished yet, Frankie hit a belter from distance & Rocket also got a  deserved goal from another lovely team effort. The passion & desire on show, from all of them, was nothing short of staggering!

Well done boys 👏🏻
