Season 3 - Episode 4: Oh Teddy, Teddy!
Teddy, Teddy, Teddy, Teddy Sheringham!"
With the gaffer and his number 3 away it was the number 2's turn to take the reigns which meant the number 2 became the gaffer and the number 4 was the number 2... know what I mean?! 🤣
Coach Joe was at a wedding... coach Wayne was playing in the Ryder Cup... so it was Jose Tom-inho steering with ship with big Dan Allardyce as the wingman, leaving Jude on orange duty! Familiar opponents in the opposite corner in Buxton Cobras, a fiesty little team that have come on loads since we played them last season ⚽️⚽️
Harrison got us off to a great start with a smashing effort, creeping forward from his midfield role to get on the scoresheet again. We toyed with the idea of dropping last seasons goal machine into a deeper role this year but he's really making that position his own, big up Haz!
The team talks with Ryan these days are quite easy... "same as last week yeh" a constant option on the left wing, taking people on and tracking back when we lost the ball. He grabbed our second goal of the game with a lovely finish from a tight angle, superb Ryan. Mia is improving every week with the 7-aside format, sticking to the opposition defenders to create space when we went on the attack.
Urged to stay forward by the coaches she was unlucky not to score but the Buxton keeper made some great saves. She finished the 2nd half on the right wing where she put some lovely crosses into the box, well done Mia. As Buxton started to break through our lines it was time to call for backup... "stop them runs to goal Ned" and he did just that! Word on the street is his pre match routine consists of watching Vinnie Jones highlights whilst eating bricks! Another solid performance from the New Mills Nigel Winterburn! We rang the changes for the 2nd half and asked some of the kids to play in different positions. Max moved out to the right wing where he used his quick feet and speed to beat his man, spraying the ball across their box for our forwards to get onto the end of. He let off another trademark rocket that left the keeper with no chance, a stellar display from big Max!
Some much needed energy from Joseph was just what we required, hustling hard and chasing down every ball. He's had his first month of proper football and we are delighted with his progress so far, showing enthusiasm and a willingness to work hard, just what you want from kids at the beginning of their football journey.
Another one of the new kids was shining again, Leon looked great upfront, working hard and constantly giving the wingers an option. His goal in the 2nd half was much deserved, stabbing home from close range after some quality work in the build up! Chika-chika slim shady aka Myles was a constant danger on our right hand side, just like Ryan on the opposite wing he was direct going forward but always willing to track back and fight to win the ball back!
We moved him to midfield in the 2nd half, where he crept forward and finished off our best move of the game. It went from Reuben to Ned, who sent it wide to Max, he's beat his man and gave it to Teddy, who unselfishly squared it for Myles to drill it home, a proper team goal that was straight from Ollersett! Reuben was back to his best this week, doing all the basics well and urging his defenders to get back when we piled forward. He came out on top in a 1v1 in the 2nd half but when Buxton were awarded a penalty there was nothing he could do when their number 11 buried it into the top bins!
Whilst the kids did laps in the summer break our Captain was sunning himself up with a 3 week holiday, sipping capri-suns and munching paella, we didn't know which version of Teddy would turn up... but to say he's had a solid start to the season would be putting it lightly... this boy has been unreal! I've said it before, he rarely has a bad game, he's either good or great! He did his job in defence but when we brought him off just before half time we decided to mix it up, "fancy playing upfront 2nd half Ted?" His eyes lit up! Teddy Sheringham we called him 🤣 his hold up play was mint and when his chance came he took it, finishing off another great move with a curler into the bottom corner! We had to move him back into defence towards the end as Buxton threw the kitchen sink at us but super Ted was on hand to settle us down. In a game where the whole team played amazing we could have given all of them player of the match, but there had to be one and it was my absolute pleasure to award it to Teddy, a proper Rolls Royce performance from our captain fantastic!
Some outstanding football from both teams today, it was a pleasure to be a part of it all. Up next... Buxton Warrior's... let's goooo 💛🖤
