The U10’s kicked off 2026 with their first game of the year against Didsbury Phoenix Maroons on a very frosty afternoon at Stockport Sports Village.
The boys were without Charlie J, who unfortunately broke his toe over the Christmas break, and will be out for a few more weeks but he still made the effort to come down and cheer on his teammates from the sidelines.
The U10’s started brightly, but after no more than 10 minutes Dylan was forced off through injury. The luck wasn’t with us, as just five minutes later James also needed a break. Pavak bravely volunteered to go in goal, while Alfie stepped up to take over Dylan’s role up front.
Once the boys adapted to the changes, they pushed on well, moving the ball nicely and building attacks with confidence. Stanley opened the scoring for the new year with a wonderful solo run down the left, finishing calmly at the far post. He followed this up shortly after with another similar effort, again beating the keeper with a composed finish.
After the break there was another reshuffle, with James returning in goal, Rhys moving into midfield and Teddy pushing forward as striker. This allowed the boys to really open up the pitch, producing some excellent passing combinations through midfield.
Teddy got on the end of a Stanley cross to extend the lead, before Alfie added another, finishing well from a Jackson delivery.
To their credit, the Maroons continued to battle and pushed hard towards the end of the game. With tired legs and the cold really beginning to bite, the boys were relieved to hear the final whistle.
A great start to 2026, with plenty of encouraging passing play on display.
Player of the Match was awarded to Teddy, who battled superbly in midfield and defence, putting in some strong tackles, showing great determination, and then capping off his performance with a well-deserved goal.
