Match Report NMJFC U10s Scorpions v Hayfield U10s - 29/09/24

There are always key fixtures you look for when they’re announced … and they are the derbies. As there’s only 1 New Mills team in the HPJFL… our local bragging rights are now against Hayfield.

Now Hayfield are a team we know so well, having played against them since U7’s … so today was a good one (as they have always been)

After being Mascots for New Mills FC v Eccleshall yesterday, they were all buzzing for today.

New Mills had a full squad for the first time this season.

We started slowly…. It was typical to begin with, early passing and the teams being wary and after a while things weren’t clicking for the Scorpions.

Rocco K was busy in midfield running up and down the field, getting stuck in… we got a lucky break with some good work from Alfie on the outside, Leo took the ball forward, but was on the far side…he made a shot but the Hayfield keeper made a great save to keep it out 👏🏻 👍🏻

After that it was pressure and defend, Rocco T came off with an injury, so a quick rejig and Will came on to play on the wing and Alfie moved upfront.

Ted had been firing long range passes up the pitch and Dylan had been having great success on the left wing, quick feet and an eye for a pass. Another change and Callum came on for Ted.

Callum, as has been said many times, so calm and will keep tackling and getting involved, reassuring at the back and trying to not let anything past.

Will was getting forward and knocked in some great crosses, he can really hit the ball.

Half time and a rocket 🚀 of a team talk from the coach to get the Scorpions to believe in their ability and play to their strengths.

Second half and the players were much more ‘tuned in’, captain Leo was barking instructions and advice, the whole team were more vocal with each other.

Rocco T had an early chance but it just went wide, the Scorpions were waiting to sting.

Great work from the back with Frankie getting the ball to Dayvid, who then got the ball through to midfield … Dylan wrestled the ball off the Hayfield defender, took onto his left foot and let fly….. ⚽️ GOAL…….!!

This gave the Scorpions their self belief that had been missing. We were on the front foot.. still having to defend Hayfield corners but every player knew their task and kept the ball out of the penalty area.  Another forward move, instigated by Ted, saw Leo pick up the ball, using his trademark quick feet, took the ball past the last Hayfield defender and slot home …. GOAL…⚽️

The ref then blew for full time just as the Scorpions were getting up another head of steam.

A great derby and as expected, a great game against Hayfield. The Scorpions are really settling as a team.

Our player of the match was Dylan 👏🏻 tirelessly working on the wing, taking on player after player  and looking to set up his teammates. He scored the goal that was the catalyst for the Scorpions resurgence.

⚽️🖤💛⚽️
