It was a silent week for the girls’ match this time around, with parents and supporters stepping back and letting the team problem-solve for themselves. The quiet touchline created a brilliant opportunity for the girls to communicate, make decisions, and rely on each other, and it was a real joy to watch their teamwork and determination unfold throughout the game.
Paige started in goal and delivered a really strong performance. Whilst a little nervous at first, there was a quiet confidence about her and she was never afraid to come forward and meet the ball. Her distribution was excellent, with some powerful kicks to start attacks, and she pulled off three saves in quick succession that kept the team in the game. Even the opposition manager commented at the final whistle that she had a great match.
At the back, Ava on the right and Stevie on the left were solid throughout. Both covered huge amounts of ground, constantly tracking back, trying to hold the ball up and push play forward when they could. Stevie did particularly well breaking up Richmond’s attacks, while Ava showed great awareness by covering gaps and supporting her teammates when needed.
Just in front of them, Poppy J did a really good job in the defensive midfield role. She read the game well, dropping back to help the defence when required and then moving the ball forward to keep the team attacking.
Further up the pitch, Evie played on the right with Florence on the left. Evie is still building her experience in the game, but her work rate was outstanding as she seemed to cover every blade of grass and wasn’t afraid to get stuck in. Florence showed some lovely footwork, using her “penguin feet” to weave past two or three players before finding Millie up front with a well-timed pass.
Annabella and Martha were introduced during the game and both made a real impact. Annabella slotted into a defensive midfield role and was everywhere on the pitch, working tirelessly for the team. She broke up play repeatedly and played some good forward passes to keep attacks moving. She even took two shots to the chest while defending but carried on bravely and kept going. Martha also played really well and kept Richmond’s defence on their toes with some lively movement.
The goal came from a brilliant moment. Paige launched a drop kick deep into Richmond’s half and Martha timed her run perfectly, meeting the ball from outside the box. With great composure, she lifted it over the keeper to score an excellent goal.
In the second half, Millie made a number of exciting runs down the right, coming very close to adding another but just missing the target. Florence also came close when she struck the post after another determined attack. Evie had a tough moment when she got hurt during the half, but showed real determination by wanting to carry on and help her team.
Throughout the match, every player worked incredibly hard for each other. It was a true team performance, and even Richmond’s manager commented afterwards on how close and competitive the game had been.
At the end, Coach Tom awarded Player of the Week to Annabella. She works incredibly hard in training, gives everything for the team during matches, and often her efforts don’t get recognised. This week, however, her hard work and determination stood out for everyone to see, and she was rewarded for this. Well done Annabella! Well done girls!
