The Millers 5–5 Richmond. A Ten-Goal Thriller!
The Millers hosted Richmond in their first home game of the season, and what a game it turned out to be – a ten-goal thriller!
In what was the girls’ first ever 11-a-side match, they started brightly, creating early chances with Alissa, Nieve and Isla all looking dangerous. Richmond then grew into the game, converting two penalties, before Nieve hit back with a clever finish across the keeper after good work from Alissa. Richmond responded strongly with two more goals, one just before half-time, leaving the Millers 4–1 down at the break.
At half-time, Coach Jo urged the girls to compete, show fighting spirit, and aim to win the second half. They took those words to heart and produced a stunning response.
Taylor was sharp off her line and distributed well, while Grace, Lily, Millie, Evie and Izzy were solid at the back, limiting Richmond’s chances. Captain Annie and Mia bossed the midfield, with Alissa and Isla tormenting the opposition on the wings. Up front, Nieve linked play superbly and Elsie’s tireless work stretched the Richmond defence.
Alissa coolly finished to reduce the deficit before Nieve added another to make it 4–3. Richmond hit back with a long-range effort, but the Millers refused to back down. Isla beat her marker and crossed for Nieve to tap in her hat-trick goal – 5–4 and game on!
Ruby came off the bench and nearly equalised, forcing a fine save, while the Millers piled on the pressure with wave after wave of corners. Finally, with the very last kick of the game, Mia scrambled home a deflected equaliser to spark huge celebrations.
Final score: Millers 5–5 Richmond – a richly deserved point after a brilliant second-half performance in tough weather conditions.
⭐ Girls of the Game: Alissa & Nieve – but every single player showed outstanding effort and spirit.
