Match Report New Mills Juniors U7s vs Stockport Cosmos JFC U7s
Stockport Power league 21/09/24; KO 10.40
Another weekend and the miniest Millers prepared for their 3rd game of the season in the Stockport Metro League. We faced a new team this week, Stockport Cosmos JFC, an unknown entity, but we always want to concentrate our football we play.
Our absentees last week were back so we had a full squad to choose from. We started with Kingsley to play the first half in goal, Kit as centre half with Leo and Logan either side as our wingbacks and Elliott and Jude starting further forward.
As always, it’s a team game and our game changers from the bench Thomas, Alistair and Lily were ready to enter the game and make a difference.
The game kicked off and immediately New Mills got onto the front foot pushing forward with early shots from both Elliott and Jude but some good defending from the Cosmos kept the ball out. After their first attack a ball forward by Leo was picked up by Elliott who played it across for Logan to latch onto and fire a great strike past the keeper. This galvanised the team and they continued to push forward.
A free kick was given to us for a handball and Logan and Kit had a little discussion about who would take it. Kit walked away and left it for Logan. With the wall in place the whistle was blown and Logan played a great pass across to Kit whose effort cannoned off the bar – fantastic play which deserved a goal.
The opposition pushed forward after this effort but our defence stood firm, with Leo’s tackling and positioning superb to stop clear shots and Kit covering in front of Kingsley to stop any clear shots on target. From one corner, Kit managed to get his foot on the ball and play a great ball through to Elliott who managed to run through and finish coolly past the keeper. Further attacks yielded more efforts on target and Kit managed to hit the crossbar for a second time with a great freekick. It was time for our game-changers to give some players a break, Alistair, Lily and Thomas came on for Jude, Elliott and Logan. They immediately got involved in the action with Thomas pushing forward on the left, Alistair and Lily further forward. Alistair was trying to play his passing game and Lily was pushing forward. She never allowed the Cosmos to settle with tough tackling and huge work ethic.
The first half continued but the opposition managed to get more of a foothold, putting Kingsley to the test on a few occasions and made some great saves.
Great determination was shown especially by Thomas who, at times, was overrun but never gave up trying to win the ball. Elliott had dropped back as right wingback and still showed his great ball carrying skills and drive to push forward. Alistair was keen to not only get the ball but play it to his teammates which was great to see.
Half time came and we took a rest with Kit, Kingsley and Elliott taking a break at the start of the second half. Our captain this week Alistair would take the gloves for the second half, determined to save as many shots as possible (his parents being informed they had to count). Logan dropped into centre back with Leo and Thomas either side and Lily and Jude pushing forward.
The second half ebbed and flowed just like the first. Lily and Jude battling so hard to drive forward with the ball with numerous shots on target but the Cosmos keeper was on form in the second half. They are both determined to score and the goal is coming soon for you both. But he wasn’t the only goalkeeper to make saves, Alistair was tested on numerous occasions and made as many saves as he could. Impressively, he was diving and keeping hold of the ball. Leo was at his best throughout the second period, his tough tackling, great positioning but his willingness to help his teammates were clear for all to see. Keep the smile on your face when you play Leo, we love to see it.
Logan was marshalling the backline well and was determined to carry the ball forward as well, he went on several mazy runs but then whatever happened, turned heal to sprint back to defend.
More substitutions with Elliott, Kit and Kingsley coming back on. Kingsley playing in the middle and immediately got stuck into the action. Kingsley was doing his best to drive the team forward, playing his passes but tackling hard to not allow the Cosmos clear chances. By the end of the game, you could tell the team had given so much, and every week they improve on part of their game. Both teams gave everything and walked away with smiles as there were shots, goals, saves, tackles, battles, runs and overall two great football teams.
Well done New Mills U7s, great team performance and improvements made every week with the pure joy after every game awesome to see.
