The Hornets are in the most incredible run of form this season but we are very aware of the quality of our opposition and it was an extremely competitive match and there really wasn’t much in it, in regards to the level of ability on show. This group of ours have become accustomed to starting the games slowly and almost with an expectation that we will just turn up and the job will get done . . . . . . . This weekend we were having none of that and we based our Pre-Match team talk about complacency.
Oliver M was missing due to illness and he is our scoring machine so the boys were going to have to compensate and we realised early on that Tintwistle were up for the challenge. With the addition of Leo from The Bees in the team the lads began to find space and the attacks were imminent. Leo was fantastic and without getting injured, would have spent longer on the pitch. Leo ran his socks off and the boys & were honoured to have him in the squad.
This was most definitely a physical affair and our Mini-Millers showed how they will match up with any style of football, and the lads simply refused to allow Tintwistle to have time on the ball. We hustled, made ourselves busy & it was refreshing to see The Hornets in a battle and we got a stroke of luck when the ball managed to creep it’s way in the net to give New Mills an early advantage.
Fenn was being tested between the posts and a couple of incredible saves kept The Millers in the game. The biggest compliment I can pay Fenn, we knew you would save them! Outstanding . . . Again
Finley was in his element, winning tackles, chasing down the runners & kicking the ball into touch, when needed. Even better, he was going past players and setting up our attacks. Albie capitalised on one of these and made sure he slammed the ball in to the back-of-the-net. Great finish from our Maestro! Albie is benefiting from the other payers ability to set-up play.
Second Half
Ronan was playing in every position asked by his coaches. “Left Wing, Left Back, Upfront, Sweeper” – Wherever we needed him and he was fantastic in all! Rocket has matured this season and is becoming Mr Reliable-Rocket.
Oliver L was in great form and I think this lad is now mastering his defensive role as nobody got passed him. Oliver L is good enough to play anyway on the pitch and this was evident this week as he was on ‘Junior Footies’ equivalent of ‘International Duty’ on Thursday, representing St. Georges Primary in a County Tournament…. A year above his age!
Speaking of defenders, Frankie was eager to add to the score line and after the coaches had accused him of being greedy moments before, he hit an absolute cracker to show us how little we know !?! Unstoppable . . . . Top Corner & The Hornets had the opportunity now to out work their opponents and secure their early lead.
Oliver B was absolutely running his socks-off to ensure that nobody was going to ruin our game plan. The Mini-Millers continued to excite and with an extremely powerful defence, the emphasis was on where we can get another goal.
Wonderful performance from a team that refuse to give up!
Player of the Match went to Frankie - The goal alone put you in contention, but you’re fight & desire was clear for all to see!
