With numbers stretched to the limit, today’s match went ahead with just five players available, our girls already facing a tough challenge before a ball was even kicked.
Poppy started in goal and, despite clearly not feeling 100%, produced a superb one-handed save and another strong stop early on.
Sadly, illness forced her off after just ten minutes, but her commitment to turn up and give everything set the tone for the rest of the team.
At the back, Annabella on the right and Ava on the left were nothing short of rock solid. Both covered every blade of grass, running tirelessly up and down the pitch and supporting each other brilliantly. Their tackling was sharp, their positioning disciplined, and they worked relentlessly to shut down attacks while still finding the energy to push forward when the opportunity arose.
In midfield, Millie on the right and Paige on the left put in huge performances. Both worked hard with clean tackles and drove forward whenever they could.
Millie made several strong runs, carrying the ball with confidence, while Paige came agonisingly close to scoring, showing great awareness and attacking intent as she pushed higher up the pitch.
Unfortunately Poppy J had to leave the game, and not only did our girls go down to four players, we were also short of a goalkeeper, however it didn’t take long for Millie to selflessly offer to go in goal. She took on the role without hesitation and played brilliantly, making herself big, staying alert, and using her drop-ball kicks to send the ball sailing over midfield and putting the girls straight back on the front foot.
The second half brought a boost as Stevie arrived and slotted straight into midfield. Stevie and Paige linked up well, combining with quick passes and intelligent movement.
Paige came inches away from a spectacular goal, striking a first-time volley that dropped over her shoulder and looked destined for the net – it would have been an absolute wonder goal.
The breakthrough finally came when Ava stepped up from the left, gliding past two defenders before calmly slotting the ball into the far corner. It was a brilliant goal, the reward for her remarkable runs and fearless attacking play.
Behind her, Annabella pushed up slightly but still managed to mop up anything that came her way, showing great awareness and strength in defence. Stevie continued to impress with neat one-twos and strong running as the team battled to the final whistle.
Player of the week was deservedly awarded to the whole team. Annabella for her tireless tussling and determination, Millie for selflessly stepping into goal when the team needed her most, Poppy for turning up and performing bravely despite feeling unwell, Ava for her outstanding runs and superb goal, Stevie for a strong all-round performance, and Paige for her intelligent movement, hard work, and that unforgettable near-miss. A true team effort from start to finish. Well done girls!
