Match report NMJFC U9's Hornets V Buxton U9's Athletic - 28/01/24

The Hornets were given their biggest test, by a long way!  Against an incredible Buxton team who absolutely dominated this game and on another day  . . . .

We will see them soon, probably on April 14th at Silverlands as the two teams have dominated the U9’s division this year and there really wasn’t much between this two squads.

Buxton took an early lead and the Hornets needed to up their game as they appeared to be sluggish to begin with and as coaches we noticed the very basics of the game needed sharpen up.

Albie struck gold and planted the ball into the back of the net to begin The Hornets fight back.

Oliver L is a shining light right now and follows every instruction given to him. Left to his own devices, well he just hits them…. from miles out. Oliver L is creating his own ‘Goal Of The Season’ competition at the moment and when struck this absolute gem, there was only going to be one outcome. The net burst and returned to his defensive position whist doing The Griddy. Amazing Oliver L!

The defenders were under more pressure than they have been in recent weeks and Albie was tracking back, winning the ball and setting up our attacks to give the lads at the back a break. Before we could settle Buxton came back at us and simply carved their way through our defence with some neat passing and there was nothing Fenn could do in goal to prevent the oppositions equalizer.

This is called COMPLACENCY! It is totally understandable for a team who are in the most incredible form this season and we would rather match-up against teams like this every weekend and have the opportunity to test our skills. Next seasons plan is to do this.

Winning your one-to-one battles, playing on the ground, shifting the ball wide & chasing back when you lose the possession are the fundamentals of our game and half-time couldn’t come quick enough and the re-set button needed pushing quickly.

Second half was far from plain sailing but The Hornets went back to basics and you could feel the momentum was building and the boy confidence was back. We were fighting again instead of rolling over and winning those crucial second balls. The dominance paid off and Oliver B grabbed the lead back with a neat goal. Albie was back to being our maestro and passing the ball around the midfield. We rode our luck at times and the boys threw their bodies on the line. Pure desire was on show and nobody personifies this more than Oliver B who was working his socks off going forward and also in defence. He was rewarded with the final goal of the game.

With the Buxton support gathered behind Fenn’s goal, they created chance after chance but Fenn was up to every challenge. He had a bit of luck on his side too but we firmly believe you earn that! Over the entire season these things level themselves out and Buxton were incredibly unlucky at times.

A tough test for this incredible team who simply don’t give up!

Julian Alvarez was in town yesterday, asking for a game next week with The Hornets but we had to explain to him the lads are Under 9’s. It is something I forget too when giving a brutal Half-Time team talk but luckily they trust us and turned on the magic. A refreshing test for our boys and you came out the other end shining!

Player of the Match went to Albie. Very deserved, he was the complete midfielder, linking up play and creating goal scoring opportunities for others.
